Abstract

The assembly comprises upper and lower yokes 3,4 coupled to wheel forks 5,6. To resist torsional forces on the yokes, they are rigidly coupled together by cross-bracing 2. This is in the form of an X-shaped member, a plate or two crossed wires. The yokes have integral bosses for engagement by the cross-bracing 2.

Description

Torsion Yo.ke (Triple Clamp)
Background
When a motorcycle is manufactured the forks are fixed to the frame of the motorcycle by means of a yoke (Fig. 1). This arrangement provides the means to steerthe motorcycle. Whenthe motorcycle-is turned there is a torsional loading applied to the forks. This loading means that the dimensions between the fork stanchions do not remain constant; Manufacturers have tried tocombatthis.probtem byhcreasing the diameter of the fotic stanchions. The invention proposes to prevent-this dimensional change -by means of a cross-brace that is fitted between the yokes (flg.4).
Description
in figure 4 a bottom yoke (4) is clamped to the fork stanchions (.5&6) using a conventional method of a pair of pinch bolts. This is followed by the steerer tube (7). This assembly is then placed in the correct orientationwithin the motorcycle frame. The top yoke (i) is then fitted to the top of the fork stanchions. Once the user is satisfied that the two yokes are aligned the cross-bace (2)cäii be fitted. This biàce is fitted to the nioi.intiig bosses (1) shoWn iii figufe 3.
The fitment ofthis cross-brace w1l ensure dimensional integrity of the fork stanchons relative to each o rdqring operation of the motorcycle and ensure that the loads are fed into the motorcycle in a controlled manner.
FigureS shows an alternative arrangement where a square plate (8) is fitted to the yokes to prevent radial movement.
Figure.6 shows a further arrangement wheretwowireropes.(9 &1O) are fitted to prevent the movement

Claims (5)

  1. Claims 1. A Brace to restrict rotational motion of top yoke relative to
    the bottom yoke around the steering axis;
  2. 2. Two yokes accord ing to claim 1 which incorporate mourning bosses for the fitment of a cross-brace.
  3. 3. A cross-brace according to claim I that is an X shape and mounted in four locations.
