A graphic display system comprises a graphic suspended between upper and lower tracks 1. Edges of the graphic are provided with means, e.g. rods, to retain the graphic in a channel formed in the track. The tracks may be plastic and flexible. The tracks may be provided in short lengths which can be connected together to form longer lengths. All edges of the graphic may be retained in tracks.
Description
A GRAPHIC DISPLAY SYSTEM
The present invention relates to a graphic display system.
Graphic display systems are already known. In one such known system a banner graphic made of a conventional heavy and durable material is provided with reinforced eyelets at specified positions and spacings across its length and depth. Rope string or cable ties inserted through these eyelets are used to support the graphic to a supporting structure such as a brick wall, wire fence, poles or a frame. Alternatives or additions to ties are bolts, screws and nails.
These methods of fixing have a number of disadvantages. For example: Once secured to a brick wall, wire fence, poles or frame it is difficult to alter to allow different size graphics to be used, leading to graphics having to be re-bolted, screwed or tied each time.
The location of the banner graphic is potentially restricted by not being able to properly secure the bolts, screws or nails in the place to suit the size of the graphic by having to compromise their location to penetrate either the bnck itself or the mortar between the bricks.
It is difficult to retain the tautness of a banner graphic using these fixing *.
methods applied to a brick wall, wire fence or poles.
A typical banner used on these surfaces does not have any frame to it and : 20 cannot be protected from the effects of damage by wind, often leading to the
ISS
banner being damaged quickly after it is put up.
SS S *S
A typical banner used on these surfaces cannot be produced in a wide range and variety of sizes. It is restricted by weight and cost, for example, it is not practical to use it for large formats, over c. 5m x 3m.
A typical banner has to be re-sited on a brick wall or a wire fence each time it is changed, leading to inconsistencies in display.
The use of a frame to which to attach a banner graphic dictates and restricts the size of the graphic to be used.
A typical banner cannot be securely fitted to a truck/van side, as it only has fixing eyelets at intervals across its length and depth, restricting its use on this surface.
It is an object of the invention to overcome or mitigate at least some or all of these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the present invention, a graphic display system comprises upper and lower tracks, a graphic adapted to be suspended between the upper and lower tracks in which the graphic is provided with means along its upper and lower edges adapted to connect with formations on the upper and lower tracks to enable the graphic to be held securely between them.
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a S..
track for use with a graphic display having a first internal chamber extending : 20 along its length and two further internal chambers running alongside and S...
disposed on opposite sides respectively of the first internal chamber the two further chambers each defining a lengthwise extending opening to receive and retain a corresponding edge of the graphic.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the means along the upper and lower edges of the graphic may comprise a rod cut to the same length as the graphic and in inserted into a hem formed along the corresponding edge of the graphic. The hem may be formed by bending over a marginal portion of the graphic to form a loop and welding or gluing the graphic edge to itself. In an alternative, the means may comprise a runner affixed to the corresponding edge of the graphic for example, by gluing, welding and by double sided tape. In a further alternative, where the graphic is made from or supported on a solid display material the edge of the material may be formed to provide the necessary connection. In all cases the means on the edge of the graphic are slid into the open end of the track with the graphic itself extending through a slot formed in the track. The track is preferably made from plastic and is advantageously flexible. The degree of flexibility can be altered by adding plasticizer to the plastic compound. For convenience track is preferably supplied in three or four :..::: metre lengths. Longer lengths may be built up by connecting adjacent lengths Ills together. The connection may comprise a bar, preferably of aluminium or other *sI* * suitable material inserted into the open ends of adjacent lengths of track prior to 5Sl
S
the lengths being pushed together. After insertion of a graphic into the tracks S...
each open end of the track may be closed off by an end cap to lock the graphic in position. The end cap may be made of plastic dimensioned to overlap the end of the track and having an intemafly screwthreaded metal block into which a retaining bolt may be screwed.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-Figure 1 shows a cross-section through a track for a system according to the invention, and part of a graphic supported therein; Figure 2 shows a cross-section through a modified track for a system according to the invention and part of a graphic supported therein; Figure 3 shows an end elevational view of an end cap for the track of Figure 1 or Figure 2; Figure 4 is a cross-section through the end of cap of Figure 3; Figure 5 is a cross-section through the track of Figure 1 with the end cap of Figures 3 and 4 in position on it; Figure 6a shows a cross-sectional view of the end cap of Figures 3 to * **.

:::; Figure 7 is a perspective view showing the connection of two lengths of track of the type shown in Figure 1; Figure 8a and 8b show a first method for fixing a graphic to a track as shown in Figure 1 or 2; Figure 9a and 9b show a second method for fixing a graphic to a track as shown in Figure 1 or 2; Figure lOa and lOb show a third method for fixing a graphic to a track as shown in Figure 1 or 2; and Figure 11 diagrammatically shows in plan view a graphic display system of curved form.
Referring to Figure 1, the graphic display system comprises a track 1. An alternative form of track is shown in Figure 2 referenced 2.
The track is made from extruded plastic and has a cross-section which has channels with a lip (3, 4) top and bottom and a rectangular central channel (5) which is utilized for fixing and connection.
The track is made from a plastic such as polyvinylchloride (PVC) which gives a balance between flexibility and strength. Plasticizer can be added to form a compound that is more flexible but less stable. The extrusion could be of any length but is preferably supplied in 3m or 4m lengths for ease of transport S. and use. Adjacent lengths of track may be joined using a connector which will be 0***

* described in more detail below.
S
* 20 The graphic which may be large format and made of any suitable material may be attached to the track (1 or 2) in one of a number of different ways. Three such ways are respectively illustrated in perspective view in Figures 8a and 8b, 9a and 9b and lOa and lOb. In the method of Figures 8a and 8b, the graphic referenced (6) is stuck or welded to a runner (7) cut to length at its upper and lower edges (upper edge only shown) and the assembly of runners (7) and graphic (6) is supported by the lip at the lower part of the upper track as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and retained by the lower track (not shown). Glue or double sided tape may be used to stick the graphic to the runners. The upper part of the assembly is shown in perspective in Figure 8a and in diagrammatic cross-section in Figure 8b. In the method of Figures 9a and 9b, the graphic (also referenced 6) is hemmed at its upper and lower edges (upper edge only shown) by sticking or welding to form loops 9 through which rods 9 cut to length are inserted to form an assembly which is then supported in the upper track a shown in Figure 1 and 2 and retained by the lower track (not shown). In the third method of Figures lOa and lOb a board of a solid display material such as that supplied under the Registered Trade Mark FOAMEX is formed along its upper and tower edges (upper edge only shown) and slid into the upper and lower tracks to be (upper track only shown in Figures lOa and lOb) retained and supported between those tracks. The graphic display may be attached to or printed on the board. S 5.5
The track I may be curved using its inherent flexibility described above to S...
accommodate a correspondingly curved graphic display. Such an arrangement S..
S
* 20 is diagrammatically shown in plan view in Figure 11. For larger displays whether :::; curved or not, adjacent lengths of track may be joined together by the method shown in Figure 6. Referring to Figure 6, two adjacent lengths of track to be joined are referenced 11 and 12. An aperture is drilled into the central channel 5 of one of the tracks and a temporary stop, such as a nail 13, inserted. A bar 14 of aluminium or other suitable material is inserted into the open end of the central channel 15 of track 12 up to the stop leaving part of the bar 14 protruding therefrom. The other adjacent track 11 is pushed over the protruding bar 14 until the edges of the adjacent tracks abut. The nail 13 may then be removed.
Referring back to Figure 11, the arrangement shown comprises five lengths of track 20 to 24 joined together at 25. As can be seen, to provide for a complex curved graphic, lengths of track 20 and 24 are straight, lengths of track 21 and 23 are curved in an externally convex manner and length of track 22 is curved in an externally concave manner.
The open ends of the tracks of a display are advantageously provided with end caps. Referring to Figures 3, 4, 5, 6a and 6b each end cap comprises a plastic cover 30, internally threaded aluminium or other suitable material block 31 and an M6 machine bolt 32. The plastic cover is pushed over the track to overlap the track to give a better appearance and provide protection from adverse weather (when used outdoors) and security. The cover 30 is * *** countersunk to receive the head of the bolt 32 which is screwed into block 31 t.
fixed to the track to fix the cover 30 to the track.
* 20 The above described display may be affixed to an existing support such as an indoor shell scheme exhibition stand. For this purpose adaptors are provided to connect the tracks of the display to parts of the support. One such existing support is that supplied by Octanorm-Vertriebs-GmbH.
This support comprises upright fluted members disposed at spaced intervals and connected by cross members. Adaptors connect the tracks of the graphic display system to the upright members so that the display system stands displaced from the support and presents a seamless unbroken display.
The above described arrangement has the following advantages.
The graphic display system provides a replacement for banners made conventionally with eyelets and ropes or cable ties.
Graphics can be printed on both sides.
Any "state of the art" graphic printing material may be used, allowing total flexibility of message.
Graphic weight is much lighter than banners reducing delivery cost to site.
Graphic can be applied to any surface with the same consistency.
Graphic provides a secure solution to applying removable and changeable graphics to a truck/van side panel, with the application of track to all four sides of the graphic. * * *IS*
Any size of graphic can be displayed with the same consistency. S...
The graphic can bend to suit any site. *q*
