Abstract
The invention relates to a building component comprising a horizontal strut located between timber floor joists, thereby restraining and preventing sideways movement of the joists. The strut preferably comprises two vertical members 2 either side of a threaded metal bar 7, an adjusting nut 9 and a casing 8. By adjusting adjusting nut 9, the two vertical members 2 are pushed apart against the joists 1. The vertical members 2 may be manufactured from plastic, with reinforcing webs 4 and spiked faces 3, that engage the joists 1. A later embodiment relates to a component which can be placed in a linear fashion across the full length of a floor span to prevent horizontal movement of timber floor joist members.
Description
THE EAS1 -STRIJTI Building Comi, onent This invention relates to a
building component and also a building construction incorporating such a component.
A large number of regulations apply to the building industry and these result in a significant amount of work being carried out once the cavity brickwork of a building has been constructed up to caves level and when the first floor joists have been placed into position. One such requirement is when floor joists spans are over 2.5 metres in length, either timber or metal strutting is required at mid span to strengthen the floor.
This means that a significant amount of work at this time is spent when a building has reached this stage, which can delay other work being carried out.
According to the present invention there is provided a building component, the component including a robust vertical studded member to both sides of the component which are attached to a threaded horizontal member and a threaded casing and tightening nuts, which will be placed between the timber floor joist memberS.
The vertical members may be made of plastic and the horizontal member may be made of steel, with the threaded members placed into the vertical members therein.
A spiked profile may be provided to the outer face of the vertical members to aid gripping to the timber joist member, which would prevent movement of the component Diagonal bracing members may be provided which may be attached to the vertical and horizontal members to provide better horizontal rigidity.
The invention also provides easy fixing of the component once in place due to the central tightening nuts being placed centrally between the timber joist members where it is easily accessible for adjustments.
The invention also provides a quicker building component assembly including a more linear stability building process. z
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. I is a diagrammatic perspective view of the building component according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic cross sectional view showing the building component of Fig. i in use.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic plan view showing numerous building components as shown in Figs. I and 2 in linear use.
Figs. 2 and 3 show the building component suitable for use between the internal timber horizontal joist members I. Vertical member 2, made of a plastic material with a spiked outer facing profiled surface 3, to provide a key to timber members.
Plastic diagonal strengthening members 4 provided to each side of the members 5 and 6, to provide added rigidity to the component in its entireity.
Figs. 2 and 3 show circular horizontal members 5 and 6 which are different in circumference to each other, to which the threaded bar 7 is moulded to member 6 and threaded outer casing 8 is to rotate freely within member 5. Therefore expansion and tightening of the members 5,6,7 and 8 can be achieved.
Figs 2 and 3 show a tightening nut 9 welded to the outer threaded casing 8 which will be used to tighten members 7 and 8 apart; which will in turn push apart 2,4,5 and 6 against the horizontal timber joist members 1. Thus providing outward pressure between timber joist members 1.
Figs 2 and 3 illustrate a threaded locking nut 10 which encircles the threaded rod member 7 and once the component has been positioned in place and adjusted the locking nut 10 is then tightened on the threaded member 7, upto member 9 thus preventing any retraction of the overall component. 1)
