Abstract
244,516. Purser, W. S. Sept. 16, 1924. Magnetic instruments. -- In sound recorders, sound-amplifying devices, or loud-speakers, and microphones of the kind comprising a coil movable bodily between magnet pole-pieces, a plane coil is mounted between two pole-pieces with adjacent, flat, active faces parallel to the plane of the coil. In a loud speaker, a flat spiral coil b, Fig. 1, carrying the incoming telephone currents is mounted at right angles to the diaphragm a and moves in and out with one half of the coil in the narrow air-gap between the flat faces of polepieces d of an electromagnet c. The air-gap may be adjustable and may be filled with sponge rubber or with oil or other liquid held by capillary attraction. The coil of fine, insulated wire may have retaining sides of mica &c., the whole being impregnated with wax or varnish, or may be made rigid without retaining sides by impregnation. In a modification, the coil is wound as shown in Fig. 5, each flattened end being placed in a magnetic field and the centre being used for the mounting or suspension of the coil.
