Abstract

A lock (1) for a door (3) comprises a housing (5) having a bolt (18) slideable therein between a latched state for engaging a receiver (23) and an unlatched state disengaged from the receiver (23). An electrically powered motor (27) through a rack and pinion drive (28) urges the bolt (18) between the latched and the unlatched state in response to manually inputted signals through button operated switches (40,41). A control circuit (35) in response to a valid remotely transmitted signal also operates the motor (27) for urging the bolt (18) between the latched and the unlatched states. A pair of microswitches (43,44) co-operable with a position cam (47) determines the latched and the unlatched states of the bolt (18). The drive motor (27) is operable in response to an unauthorised attempt to urge the bolt (18) from the latched state for urging the bolt (18) into the latched state until the unauthorised attempt has ceased. The bolt (18) is operable into the latched state on respective opposite sides of the housing (5), so that the lock (1) is suitable for a right-handedly hinged and a left-handedly hinged door.
