Abstract
A collapsible support stand comprises a central boss 3 for receiving a pole and inflatable support means 11 spaced radially outwardly of the boss 3 and connected to the boss 3 by way of a flexible base 15. The boss 3 has a vertical bore 5 and a clamping screw 9 is inserted in a transverse bore 7 to clamp a pole. When the support means 11 is inflated, a contained hollow 21 is formed between the boss 3 and the support means 11. In use, this hollow 21 is filled with ballast.
Description
A COLLAPSIBLE SUPPORT STAND
The present invention relates to a collapsible support stand and particularly but not exclusively relates to a collapsible stand suitable for supporting a parasol or the like.
It can be problematic to erect a parasol, or any other device comprising a vertical pole that requires support to enable the device to be used, when transported to a location where is it difficult for the ground to support the pole as might be the case where the ground is particularly soft, such as a sandy beach, or particularly hard, such as rocky terrain.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a co11piblc support stand, the stand comprising a central boss to receive, in use, a pole of a device to be supported, the stand further comprising inflatable support means spaced radially outwardly of the boss and connected to the boss, the stand being arranged such that, when the support means is inflated, a cavity is defined between the base and the support means, the cavity being filled, in use, with ballast such that the stand resists the device falling over.
Preferably the support means comprises an inflatable ring that extends around the boss.
Preferably the support means is connected to the boss via a collapsible connection.
Preferably the collapsible connection comprises a flexible membrane.
Preferably the boss is provided with securing means to secure the pole of the parasol in a bore of the boss.
The securing means may comprise a screw that is threaded through the wall of the boss and into the bore so as to clampingly engage the pole of the device to be supported in use.
The securing means may comprise a compression type fitting whereby actuation means is provided to apply a clamping force to clamp the pole of the device to be supported against the bore of the boss in use.
Other aspects of the present invention may include any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but embodiments wili new be described b way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible stand in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is a part sectional perspective view taken on line A-A of Figure 1.
Referring to the Figures, a circular stand 1 for supporting a device such as a parasol (not shown) comprises a central, conical, substantially rigid boss 3 formed with a through bore 5. Securing means is provided comprising a threaded, transverse bore 7 that extends through a sidewall of the boss 3 and receives in use a clamping screw 9 that can be threaded through the bore 7 so that the end of the screw 9 clampingly engages the lower end of a support pole of the parasol.
By parasol we mean any device comprising a support pole on top of which is a shield that provides an area of shelter from the sun or rain.
Other devices that could be supported by the stand of the present invention include wind breaks, gazebos, collapsible or temporary shelters, or tents or the like.
The stand 1 further comprises support means comprising a tubular inflatable support ring 11 that is radially outwardly spaced from, and extends around, the boss 3. The support 11 is provided with a valve means 13 that can be used to inflate and deflate the support 11 manually and/or with a pump.
The support 11 is connected to the boss 3 via connection means which in this example comprises a circular flexible membrane 15. The outer periphery of the membrane 1 5 is secured to thc inflatabie support ii using any suitable means which may include, for example, adhesive and or welding. The inner periphery of the membrane 15 is secured to the boss 3 by any suitable means. In this example, the inner periphery of the membrane 15 is clamped or glued in a peripheral groove 17 formed at a lower portion of the boss 3. The groove 17 may be moulded into the boss 3, or could be defined between the underside of the boss 3 and a removable base (not shown) that screws or clips onto the underside of the boss 3.
In use of the base 1, the inflatable support 11 and membrane 15 are unrolled or unfolded from a collapsed condition and the support 11 is inflated using the valve means 13. The lower end of the pole of the parasol in inserted into the bore 5 of the boss 3 so as to extend through the bore 5 to protrude through the underside of the stand I into the ground on which the stand 1 is resting. The clamping screw 9 is threaded into the transverse bore 7 of the boss 3 so as to clampingly engage the side of the lower end of the parasol pole.
A cavity 21 is thus defined between the boss 3 and the support 11 and this cavity 21 is filled in use with ballast which could be, for example, sand, rocks or water. This ballast acts downwardly on the membrane 15 of the stand 1 at positions radially outwardly of the boss 3 and this radially outwardly spaced downwardly directed force acts to resist the parasol falling over in use.
The stand 1 need not be circular and could instead be any desired shape.
The connection means could additionally comprise collapsible, foldable or substantially rigid reinforcing spikes that extend between the boss 3 and the inflatable support 11.
The stand 1 could be used to support any ether dcsrd device comprising a vertical pole that requires, or benefits from, a support for the device to be used.
