Abstract
In a method of removing metallic ingredients from molten metallic masses, for example arsenic, tin, or antimony from lead, of the kind comprising the use of an oxidizing agent, there is used as the oxidizing agent an oxysalt of one or more metals capable of combining with the metallic mass and having less affinity for oxygen than has a metallic ingredient to be removed. The oxidizing agent may be spent reagent resulting from previous treatment of metal with caustic alkali and an oxidizing agent such as sodium nitrate; the spent reagent may be thereby regenerated for further use. The spent reagent may be used as the sole oxidizing agent, or along with sodium nitrate &c. Tin and arsenic may be removed from lead by the use of a reagent containing sodium antimonate along with caustic soda and preferably sodium chloride, the antimony passing into the lead and the tin and arsenic being removed as sodium stannate and arsenate; similarly, arsenic may be removed by the use of sodium stannate, the tin passing into the lead and sodium arsenate being formed. If required, antimony may subsequently be removed from the lead in known manner. The apparatus used is preferably that described in Specifications 184,639 and 199,660, [both in Class 82 (i), Metals, Extracting &c.].
