Abstract
A masonry bed reinforcement 2 is connected at intervals to an inner protruding stiffening brace 3. The masonry bed reinforcement 2 may be installed as a ring beam. The stiffening brace 3 stands away from the inner face of the wall when in use so as not to impede moisture running down the wall. The stiffening brace 3 may have holes or slots 4 to accommodate temporary lateral bracing and subsequent permanent fixings for floor joists and roof trusses.
Description
Improvements relating to masonry wall support and restraint In patent
GB No 234507 lB I disclose a wall structure, that eliminates the inner leaf of a cavity wall, leaving the remaining outer masonry leaf as the sole loadbearing and weatherscreen element, with an inner lining of insulation and plasterboard supported directly of it.
By omitting the strengthening and support of the inner leaf of the cavity wall there is a need to provide additional stiffening and support to a single leaf or single brick skin wall, both during construction, and on completion.
A two or three story single brick external wall would be particularly vulnerable to wind pressure during construction. The main tendency would be for the walL/walls to be blown inwards, more so, because generally the outside would be protected by scaffolding.
When floors and roof are in place and where they are appropriately designed and securely fixed to the supporting wall, these provide considerable lateral support and restraint to the walls and entire structures.
This invention seeks to provide additional support, stiffening and bracing of masonary whilst under construction, and in turn to ue those elements that remain in place on completion to facilitate fixing, support and restraint of floors and roof to enhance the structural integrity of the building.
Corners, staggers, internal walls, abutments, flues and chimneys all provide lateral support to the external wall both during construction and an completion. However there will be lengths and areas of walls that are vulnerable and where additional strengthening and bracing is required.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is herein described with reference to illustrations on drawing No 1 figs 1 & 2.
An effective ring beam of brickwork reinforcing or similar 1 is placed in the masonary bed joint all around the external wall, at or around floor level, and along gable walls at or around ceiling level.
Incorporated within the reinforced bed, either welded or otherwise fixed, protruding plates 2 of a square fishtail or dovetail shape, coupled to a horizontal metal bar 3, flat or angled bar, which in-between the protruding plates stands away from the wall so a not to impede moisture running down the inner face of the wall.
It is envisaged that the protruding plates would be 200mm centres apart to coincide with subsequent floor joists positioned at 400m or 600m centres.
Close to the inner face of the wall where the plates 2 protrude are holes or slots 4 into which temporary bracing described later can be inserted and into which joists hangers and roof truss restraint straps can subsequently be hooked into.
Where additional bracing to this built in stiffening/restraint is required, horizontal cross braces 5 (shown as dashed lines) across corners of the building, or from internal partitions to the external wall as shown on building plan illustration fig 2 would be hooked, clipped or bolted, or similar into position.
When the structure is completed and the roof in place and floor installation under way, these in-line and cross braces are removed and the protruding slots or holes of the embedded metal plates utilised to fix and support floors and roof, to provide a strong tie from these elements directly into an effective ring beam or in the case of a gable, a wall beam, creating strong lateral restraint to loadbearing walls and structural integrity to the whole building.
To prevent moisture running down the inside face of the external wall bridging these protruding plates and either rusting the inner stiffening beam or bridging onto floor, internal insulation etc it is envisaged that outwardly and downwardly sloping ç-' ov, plastic similar snap on or glued on caps will be placed over the protruding plates close to the inner face of the wall to deflect moisture away from the stiffening beam towards the outer wall.
