Description

VAGINAL SPECULUM
The present invention relates to a vaginal speculum, and more J)articularly to a vaginal speculum that is convenient for medical personnel to operate, A vaginal speculum is used to expand a patient's vagina to allow the vagina to be examined easily or to collect secretions from the vagina. The vaginal speculum is plastic and is disposable.
With reference to Figs. 6 and 7, a conventional vaginal speculum has a stationary bracket (40), a pivoting bracket (50) and a nut (60).
The stationary bracket (40) has an upper connector (41) and an upper tong (42). The upper connector (41) has a bottom and a stationary lever (43). The stationary lever (43) extends out from the bottom and has a through hole (44).
rihe through hole is defined through the stationary lever (43). The upper tong (42) is somewhat tapered, protrudes from the upper connector (41) and has a proximal end and a distal end. The proximal end is mounted on the upper connector (41).
With further reference to Fig. 8, the pivoting bracket (50) connects pivotally to the stationary bracket (40) and has a base (51) and a lower tong (52).
The base (51) connects pivotally to the upper connector (41) and has a bottom and a pivoting lever (53). The pivoting lever (53) extends out from the bottom at an angle (a) forward of the stationary lever (43). The pivoting levea-(53) has an inner side. The inner side faces the stationary lever (43) and has a threaded rod (54). The threaded rod (54) exlcnds from the inner side, corresponds to and extends through the through hole (44) in the stationary lever (43) and has a
I
length, a distal end (541) and a thread. The distal end (54.1) extends through the through hole (44). The thread is formed the entire length of the threaded rod (54).
The lower tong (52) protrudes from the base (51), corresponds to the upper tong (42), selectively abuts the upper tong (42), is slightly tapered and has a proximal end and a distal end. The proximal end is mounted on the base (51).
To use the vaginal speculum, the distal ends of the upper tong (42) and the lower tong (52) are inserted into the vagina and are separated from each other and spread the vagina when medical personnel squeeze the pivoting lever (53) toward the stationary lever (43).
The nut (60) is screwed detachably onto the threaded rod (54) between the stationary lever (43) and the distal end (541) of the threaded rod (54), selectively abuts the stationary lever (43), s larger than the through hole (44) in Ihe stationary lever (43) and has a threaded hole (61). The threaded hole (61) is defined through the nut (60), is screwed onto the threaded rod (54) and has an inner surface and a thread. The thread is formed on the inner surface of the threaded hole (61) and corresponds to the thread on the threaded rod (54) to screw onto the threaded rod (54) smoothly. The nut (60) can be screwed onto the threaded rod (54) to press against the stationary lever (43) to draw the pivoting lever (53) toward the stationary lever (43) so the angle (a) reduces and the lower long (52) separates from the upper tong (42) a desired amouiit.
However, the nut (60) is screwed onto the threaded rod (54) loosely to make adjusting the nut (60) on the threaded rod (54) convenient for medical personnel. However, the threaded rod (54), especially the distal end (541), does not have a limit to stop the nut (60) as it approaches the distal end (541) of the * . I:hreaded rod (54), so the nut (60) may inadvertently disengage from the threaded rod (54). Reassembling the nut (60) and the threaded rod (54) will waste the medical personnel's time. Furthermore, the nut (60) may drop. The medical Personnel may not be able to find it, it may drop on the floor and be contaminated, or it may drop on a patient's body and make the patient nervous.
The primary objective of the present invention is to provide a vaginal pecuJum, and more particularly to a vaginal speculum that is convenient for medical personnel to operate.
To achieve the objective, the vaginal speculutn in accordance with the Present invention has a stationary bracket, a pivoting bracket and a nut, The stationary bracket has a stationary lever. The stationary lever has a through hole defined through the stationary lever. The pivoting bracket connects pivotally to the stationary bracket and has a pivoting lever. The pivoting lever has a threaded rod protruding from the pivoting lever toward and extending through the through hole in the stationary lever. The threaded rod has an outer surface, a thread, a distal end and a limit. The thread is formed on the outer surface, The distal end extends through the through hole. The limit is aligned with the thread. The nut is screwed detachably around the threaded rod between the stationary lever and the distal end of the threaded rod, selectively abuts the stationary lever and will be stopped by the limit from inadvertently detaching from the threaded rod.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a conventional aginaI speculurn in accordance with the prior art with a stationary lever, a threaded rod and a nut; Fig. 7 is a side view in partial section of the conventional vaginal speculum in Fig. 6 with the nut screwed detachably around the threaded rod; Fig. 8 is a side view in partial section of the conventional vaginal speculurn in Fig. 6 with the nut abutting the stationary lever.
* With reference to Fig. 1, a vaginal speculum in accordance with the present invention has a stationary bracket (10), a pivoting bracket (20) and a nut (60).
The stationary bracket (10) has an upper connector (U) and an upper tong (12). The upper connector (11) has a bottom and a stationary lever (13). The aationary lever (13) protrudes from the bottom of the upper connector (11) and has a through hole (14). The through hole (14) is defined through the stationary lever (13). The upper tong (12) protrudes from the upper connector (11) and has
S
a proximal end and a distal end. The proximal end is mounted on the upper connector (11). The distal end is narrower than the proximal end.
The pivoting bracket (20) connects pivotalty to the stationary bracket (10) and has a base (21) and a lower tong (22). The base (2.1) connects pivotally to the upper connector (11) and has a bottom and a pivoting lever (23).
With further reference to Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5, the pivoting lever (23) extends out from the bottom at an angle (a) between the pivoting lever (23) and the stationary lever (13). The angle (a) is reduced and the upper and lower tongs (12, 22) separate from each other when the pivoting lever (23) is pulled toward the stationary lever (13). The pivoting lever (23) has an inner side. The inner side faces the stationary lever (13) and has a threaded rod (24). The threaded rod (24) protrudes from the inner side, corresponds to and extends through the through hole (14) in the stationary lever (13) and has a length, a thread (240), a distal end (249) arid a limit. The thread (240) is formed along the length of and around the i:hreaded rod (24) and has a thread pitch. The distal end (249) extends through the through hole (14) in the stationary lever (13). The limit is aligned with the thread (240), is near the distal end (249) of the threaded rod (24) to make the thread (240) irregular and may be a smooth thread (241), an enlarged thread (242) or a tine thread (243).
The smooth thread (241) is a ring mounted around part of the thread (24(Y) near the distal end (249) of the threaded rod (24) and has an outer surface. The outer surface of the smooth thread (241) may have an external thread (241').
The enhuged thread (242) is aligned with the thread (240) on the Ihreaded rod (24), is mounted near the distal end (249) of the threaded rod (24) * 6 and is larger than the thread (240) on the threaded rod (24).
The fine thread (243) is aligned with the thread (240) on the threaded rod (24) and has a thread pitch. The thread pitch of the fine thread (244) is narrower than the thread pitch of the thread (240) on the threaded rod (24).
The lower tong (22) extends from the base (21), corresponds to the upper tong (12), selectively abuts the upper tong (12) and has a proximal end and a distal end. The proximal end is mounted on and protrudes from the base (21).
The distal end is narrower than the proximal end. The distal ends of the upper tong (12) and the lower tong (22) extend into the vagina when the vaginal speculurn is used, will separate from each other when medical personnel pull the pivoting lever (23) toward the stationary lever (13) and will expand the vagina.
The nut (60) is screwed detachably around the threaded rod (24) between the stationary lever (13) and the distal end (249) of the threaded rod (24),' is larger than the through hole (14) in the stationary lever (13), selectively abuts the stationary lever (13) and has a threaded hole (61.). The threaded hole (61) is defined through the rwt (60), is screwed around the threaded rod (24) and has an inner thread (62), The inner thread (62) corresponds to the thread (240) on the threaded rod (24) to screw smoothly on the threaded rod (24). The thread (62) may press against the smooth thread (241) to form the external thread (241') on the outer surface othe smooth thread (241) when the (60) nut is screwed forcibly through the limit. The external thread (241') corresponds to the thread (62) in the nut (60). The nut (60) can be threaded through the threaded rod (24) to approach and abut the stationary lever (13) to hold the pivoting lever (23) at a specific angle (a) relative to the stationary lever (13) and hold the upper and lower tongs (12, 22) apart.
Because the threaded rod (24) has a limit near the distal end (249) of the threaded rod (24), the nut (60) cannot inadvertently screw through the limit unless the nut (60) is forced purposely to do so. Thus, the nut (60) wIll not disengage from the threaded rod (24) by accident, will not drop on the floor or a patient's body and will not be lost. Moreover, the nut (60) is loosely screwed around the threaded rod (24), so medical personnel can rapidly screw the nut (60) toward arid against the stationary lever (13).
