Refrigerating, compression and vacuum machines for.-The supplementary cooler B<1>, or the supplementary cooler and the condenser B, of a compression plant A - - D employing carbonic acid or other liquefiable refrigerant are cooled by water or other liquid supplied from the evaporator of a steam-operated vacuum refrigerating machine. In the arrangement shown, two vacuum machines are associated with the compression machine, water cooled in the evaporator M of one machine being delivered by a pump P and pipe L to the condenser B, while water at a lower temperature from the evaporator E of the second vacuum machine is delivered by a pump I and pipe J to the supplementary cooler B<1>. The water discharged from the cooler B<1> may be mixed with the condensed cooling-water flowing through the pipe L, and the evaporator M may be replenished through a pipe O dipping into a discharge tank R from the condenser or into the condenser itself. The supply to the evaporator E mav be obtained from the water cooled in the first evaporator M. The steam-operated exhausters N, G deliver to a common condenser H<1>, which may be special to the plant or may be the condenser of another vacuum refrigerating machine. The pump I, P may be driven from one motor T, which may be the motor for the compression machine. The plant is applicable particularly to warships already provided with compression refrigerating machines for cooling provision holds and vacuum machines for cooling ammunition holds. In such cases the vacuum machine is increased in capacity to provide the condenser cooling-water, as well as the water for cooling the holds, which may be taken from a branch U on the pipe L. In a modification, a single vacuum machine may supply cooled water for the supplementary cooler, the discharge from which is mixed with the usual supply of uncooled water to the condenser.
