Abstract
A shaping rod 2 for perming hair comprises a rod containing an electric heater, the rod having fixing teeth 21 at either end for fixing the rod to a lock of hair and a plurality of protruding thorn-like members 24 extending radially from the outer surface of the rod. The protruding members enable the shaping rod to wind the hairs more easily and prevent the hot rod from directly contacting with the skin, thereby providing a simple structure that is easy to use. The rod may have a socket 22 for connection to an electrical supply.
Description

SHAPING ROD FOR PERMING THE HAIR

The present invention relates to a shaping rod for perming the hair.

The method for shaping the hairstyle to a desired degree of curl is called perming. When perming, the hair is curled by heat so that the hairstyle can be set. For example, the hairs are divided into many bundles, each bundle of hairs is wound on a rod that can generate heat after electricity is supplied.

After a certain period of time, the degree of curl of the hairs can be set. Such a kind of heat-generating rod is called the "shaping rod" by those skilled in this art. The present invention aims to improve the structure of such a shaping rod.

The conventional shaping rod used in hairdressers is shown in Figs. 1 to 4. Fig. 1 is a front view. Figs. 2 and 3 are a left side view and a right side view, respectively. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 1.

The shaping rod (1) is formed into a small rod with a length of about 10cm.

The diameter of the cross section of the rod can be in the range of 1cm to 2cm depending on the degree of curl of the hair. Both ends of the rod (1) are provided with several fixing teeth (11). After the bundle of hairs is wound on the rod (1), a heat-resistant fixing coil is hung between the fixing teeth (11) on both sides of the rod (1) to temporarily hold the hair on the rod (1) without disheveling. Then, an electric plug is inserted into the socket (12) on the distal end of the shaping rod (1). By supplying a low-voltage current (of about 24Volt), the electric heater (13) in the center of the rod (1) generates heat and the temperature is set in a range of about 140 C to 200 C. After half an hour or so, the degree of curl of the hairs wound on the shaping rod (1) can be set to conform to the outer periphery of the shaping rod (1). However, the conventional shaping rod (1) still has the problems as follows. First, the surface of the rod (1) is so smooth that it is not easy to wind the bundle of hairs on the shaping rod (I) tightly, which seriously affects the desired hairstyle.

Second, the temperature of the rod (1) is kept above 140 C, and such a high temperature will hurt the skin. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a layer of insulator first on each bundle of hairs, which wastes materials and time. Also, this process is very inconvenient and time consuming. Thus, the present invention aims to overcome the above-mentioned problems.

The present invention seeks to overcome some of the above identified problems.

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a shaping rod for perming the hair formed into a small rod, the rod provided with an electric heater therein, both ends of the rod provided with several fixing teeth for fixing the bundle of hairs, characterized in that a plurality of small conical thorns are provided densely on the outer periphery of the rod thereby to facilitate the shaping rod to wind the hairs and insulate against heat.

The description relating to the structure and function of the shaping rod of the present invention is made with reference to the accompanying drawings.

However, it should be understood that the drawings are illustrative but not used to limit the scope of the present invention.

Fig. 1 is a front view showing a conventional shaping rod; Fig. 2 is a left side view showing a conventional shaping rod; Fig. 3 is a right side view showing a conventional shaping rod; Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 4-4 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the external appearance of the shaping rod of the present invention; Fig. 6 is a front view showing the shaping rod of the present invention; Fig. 7 is a left side view showing the shaping rod of the present invention; Fig. 8 is a right side view showing the shaping rod of the present invention; and Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 9-9 in Fig. 6.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the external appearance of the shaping rod of the present invention. Fig. 6 is a front view showing the shaping rod of the present invention. Fig. 7 is a left side view showing the shaping rod of the present invention. Fig. 8 is a right side view showing the shaping rod of the present invention. Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view taken along the line 9-9 in Fig. 6. The present invention is characterized in the design of its external appearance. The outer periphery of the rod (2) is densely provided with a plurality of small conical thorns (24), like a small hedgehog. With such an arrangement, it is very easy to wind the bundle of hairs tightly. After the bundle of hairs is wound well, a heat-resistant fixing ring is hung on the fixing teeth (21) on both ends of the rod (2) to hold the hair on the rod (2) without disheveling. By inserting a plug of about 24-volt into the socket (22), the electric heater (23) in the rod (2) generates heat to keep the temperature above 140 C. After a predetermined period of time, the degree of curl of the hairs wound on the shaping rod (2) can be set. In the present invention, although the temperature of the shaping rod (2) is the same as that in prior art, yet the portions contacting with the skin are the distal ends of the thorns (24) made of a heat-resistant material having poor thermal conductivity. Therefore, the temperature of the distal ends of the thorns (24) is kept under 40 C and will not cause any uncomfortable feeling to the skin. Indeed, the thorns (24) with lower temperature cannot hurt the skin, hence it is not necessary to provide a layer of insulator to insulate the heat from the skin. As a result, the operation of the present invention is much easier. Except for the thorns (24) densely provided on the outer periphery of the shaping rod (2), the heating method and the structure of other portions of the present invention are the same as those in

prior art.

In conclusion, the thorns (24) densely provided on the outer periphery of the shaping rod (2) can facilitate the shaping rod (2) to wind the bundle of hairs tightly. Also, the operation of the present invention is very easy so that a lot of time and labor can be saved.

As can be seen from Figs. 5 to 9, the outer periphery of the conventional shaping rod is provided densely with thorns (24) made of a heat-resistant material.
