Abstract

Clay in a state of dispersion in a liquid medium is deflocculated by the addition of sodium silicate together with a proportion of an acid, for example sulphuric or hydrochloric acid insufficient to neutralize the whole of the alkali content of the silicate. The deflocculated clay may be subsequently flocculated by the addition of an acid or acid salt in a proportion insufficient to effect complete neutralization.
