Description

1 2435631 I Garment, fabric and garment manufacturing process 3 The
present invention relates to a garment which is waterproof, breathable and 4 stretchable, and also to a fabric suitable for use in such garments and a method of manufacturing such garments from the fabric.

6:...:.

7 Background to the invention

9 Considerable research has gone into the development of technical fabrics for use in a: : :* wide range of leisure, work and sporting activities. For example, breathable 11 waterproof materials such as Goretex (Goretex is a trade mark of W. L. Gore & 12 Associates, Inc.) have been widely adopted in sportswear for use outdoors in wet 13 weather. Stretchable materials, such as those containing Lycra (Lycra is a trade 14 mark of Invista) are also found in many types of garment, particularly sports clothing.

16 The aim of the present invention is to provide garments which are not only 17 waterproof, but also heat insulating, stretchable and breathable, as well as fabric for 18 use as a component of such garments. Such garments would be desirable for use in 19 sports such as cycling where, in wet weather, cyclists prefer garments which protect them from the elements, do not restrict movement, and fit closely, thereby reducing 21 wind drag.

23 Summary of the invention

According to the present invention, there is provided a garment comprising a plurality 26 of fabric panels, at least two adjacent panels comprising a stretchable multilayer 1 fabric, the stretchable multilayer fabric comprising a stretchable face fabric layer, a 2 stretchable insulating fabric layer inward of the face fabric layer, and a stretchable, 3 breathable, waterproof layer between the insulating fabric layer and the face fabric 4 layer, wherein some or all of the joins between stretchable multilayer fabric panels are covered by a stretchable water-resistant tape 7 The resulting garment is therefore able to stretch to fit a wearer and to allow them to 8 move relatively freely, but is also waterproof (due to the stretchable waterproof 9 breathable layer). The garment should also be breathable, although in some embodiments breathability will be reduced if the face fabric layer or insulating fabric 11 layer becomes saturated with water The face fabric layer and the insulating fabric 12 layer are preferably breathable, at least when dry.

14 The multilayer fabric may comprise further layers. The layers may be laminated:. . together and may have adhesive therebetween. :::.

17 Preferably, the stretchable tape is located on the outside of the garment. Preferably, :. .. :1 18 the water-resistant stretchable tape comprises a water-resistant finish which resists * 19 the penetration by water of any gaps between multilayer fabric panels where they S...

join. The water-resistant finish could be provided as a layer on the top surface of the 21 water-resistant stretchable tape but preferably the water-resistant finish extends 22 through some or all of the body of the water-resistant stretchable tape. Preferably, 23 the water-resistant finish has been applied by treating a fabric with a water-resistant 24 treatment.

26 The water-resistant stretchable tape is preferably waterproof. The water-resistant 27 stretchable tape typically includes an adhesive for adhering the water-resistant 28 stretchable tape to the face fabric layer. Preferably, the adhesive is waterproof.

29 More preferably, the adhesive is waterproof and breathable.

31 Preferably, the water-resistant stretchable tape comprises a fabric layer having a 32 water-resistant finish and an adhesive which is waterproof and preferably also 33 breathable.

Preferably also, the face fabric layer has a water-resistant finish applied thereto to 36 resist water absorption when the garment comes into contact with water. Preferably, 37 the face fabric layer resists absorption as much as possible. The water-resistant I finish is advantageous where the face fabric layer is made from a material which 2 would otherwise be absorbent, at least to some extent. Preferably also, the face 3 fabric layer is breathable and has a water-resistant finish applied thereto. By 4 reducing water absorption in the face fabric layer, the breathability of the multilayer fabric is improved in wet conditions. The water-resistant finish also reduces or 6 prevents penetration of moisture under the stretchable tape through the face fabric 7 layer.

9 Preferably, each of the stretchable face fabric layer, the stretchable, breathable, waterproof layer, the stretchable insulating fabric layer and the stretchable tape have 11 a maximum recoverable extension of at least 15%, that is to say, they can be 12 stretched by at least 15% and still recover their original shape. Preferably, they each 13 have a maximum recoverable extension of at least 25%. Preferably, they each have 14 a maximum recoverable extension of less than 200%. The maximum recoverable:. . extension may be less than 100%. :..::.

17 The stretchable face fabric layer is preferably soft, that is to say, it preferably yields to:...:.

18 the touch. Preferably, the stretchable face fabric layer is smooth. Preferably, the 19 stretchable face fabric layer is knitted. The stretchable face fabric layer may comprise elastane. The stretchable face fabric layer may comprise nylon. For *.

21 example, the stretchable face fabric layer may comprise approximately 80% nylon 22 and 20% elastane. Elastane may be Lycra brand elastane. (Lycra is a trade mark 23 of Invista).

The stretchable, breathable, waterproof layer preferably comprises microporoous 26 stretchable polyurethane or polytetrafluoroethane.

28 The stretchable, insulating, fabric layer is preferably soft, that is to say, it preferably 29 yields to the touch. Preferably, the stretchable, insulating, fabric layer is knitted. The stretchable, insulating, fabric layer is preferably made of a fleece material such as 31 knitted polyester. The fabric layer may be made from a brushed, knitted fabric such 32 as brushed, knitted polyester.

34 The stretchable tape is preferably soft, that is to say, it preferably yields to the touch.

Preferably, the stretchable face fabric layer is knitted. The stretchable face fabric 36 layer may comprise elastane. The stretchable face fabric layer may comprise nylon.

37 For example, the stretchable face fabric layer may comprise approximately 80% 1 nylon and 20% elastane. Elastane may be Lycra brand elastane. (Lycra is a trade 2 mark of Invista).

4 More preferably, the stretchable tape may be made from the same material as the stretchable face fabric. Preferably also, the stretchable tape may be of the same 6 thickness as the stretchable face fabric. This means that the tape should display 7 similar stretching properties to the underlying stretchable face fabric. Preferably, the 8 stretchable tape and the face fabric have the same water-resistant finish.

Adjacent panels of multilayer stretchable fabric are preferably joined by ultrasonic 11 welding.

13 Preferably, the garment is legwear. Typically, the garment is cycling apparel, for 14 example, cycle trousers, cycle tights, cycle knickers or cycle shorts.

16 According to the second aspect of the present invention there is provided a 17 stretchable multilayer fabric comprising a stretchable face fabric layer, a stretchable. . 18 insulating fabric layer inward of the face fabric layer, and a stretchable, breathable, p 19 waterproof layer between the insulating fabric layer and the face fabric layer.

I

21 Preferred features of the fabric correspond to the first aspect above. * : ::: 23 According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of 24 making a garment according to the first aspect, comprising the steps of: 26 (i) forming a multilayer fabric comprising a stretchable face fabric layer, a 27 stretchable insulating fabric layer inward of the face fabric layer, and a 28 stretchable, breathable, waterproof layer between the insulating fabric 29 layer and the face fabric layer; 31 (ii) cutting one or more piece of multilayer fabric to form a plurality of 32 panels of multilayer fabric; 34 (iii) joining the plurality of panels of multilayer fabric to form a garment; 36 (iv) taping the seams between the plurality of panels of multilayer fabric by 37 applying a stretchable water-resistant tape to the seams.

2 Preferably, the method further comprises the step of applying a water-resistant finish 3 to the stretchable face fabric layer before the plurality of panels of multilayer fabric 4 are joined.

6 Preferably, the method further comprises the step of applying a water-resistant finish 7 (which may be waterproof) to the stretchable tape before the plurality of panels of 8 multilayer fabric are joined.

Further preferred features correspond to the first aspect above.

12 Brief Description of the Drawings

14 An example embodiment of the present invention will now be illustrated with reference to the following figure, in which: ..

17 Figure 1 is a cross-section through part of a garment according to the present 18 invention. a * I I.

Detailed Description of an Example Embodiment as. a * a

22 Figure 1 is a cross-section through part of a garment according to the present 23 invention, showing two sections of a stretchable multilayer (trilaminate) fabric 1 joined 24 by an ultrasonically welded seam 2. Ultrasonically welded seam 2 is covered by a stretchable waterproof tape 4 which reduces or prevents moisture passing through 26 theseam2.

28 The multilayer fabric 1 comprises a stretchable face fabric 6 which is knitted and 29 comprises 80% nylon and 20% elastane. The elastane is typically Lycra brand elastane. (Lycra is a trade mark of Invista). The face fabric is soft, that is to say, it 31 yields to the touch.

33 Underneath the face fabric is a stretchable, breathable, waterproof layer 8 made from 34 microporous polyurethane. The innermost layer is a stretchable insulating fabric layer 10 comprising 100% polyester knitted fabric fleece. The stretchable insulating 36 fabric layer is also soft.

1 The stretchable waterproof tape 4 comprises a 10mm wide strip of material 12 that is 2 of the same material used as stretchable face fabric 6, and which has been treated 3 with a water-resistant treatment of conventional fluorocarbon water-resistant material, 4 for example Teflon (Teflon is a trade mark of Du Pont). A water-resistant treatment of conventional fluorocarbon water-resistant material is also applied to the face fabric 6 6. The stretchable waterproof tape further comprises a waterproof breathable 7 adhesive layer 14 which adheres the tape to the face fabric and means that the tape 8 as a whole is waterproof.

The face fabric, the stretchable insulating fabric layer, the stretchable, breathable, 11 waterproof layer, and the stretchable water-resistant tape all have a maximum 12 recoverable extension of 15% to 200%.

14 The resulting garment is waterproof and breathable, due to the stretchable, , . breathable, waterproof layer, and is also warm due to the stretchable insulating fabric 16 layer. Because each layer, and the water-resistant tape, are also stretchable, the 17 garment fits snugly, reducing wind resistance and allowing good freedom of 18 movement. These properties are of great benefit for use in outdoor sports such as 19 cycling. Accordingly, the garment may be cycle trousers, cycle tights, cycle knickers, S.. -cycle shorts ora cycle jacket.

*11, I. LI 0 S *0 S 22 The use of a water-resistant treatment is beneficial as it resists the penetration of 23 water through the face fabric, underneath the water-resistant tape and through the 24 seams.

26 The garment is manufactured by laminating the stretchable face fabric, the 27 stretchable, breathable, waterproof layer, and the stretchable insulating fabric layer 28 together. The water-resistant treatment can then be applied to the face fabric by 29 known methods. The resulting multilayer fabric is then cut into the required shapes.

31 The stretchable waterproof tape is manufactured by cutting strips of knitted material 32 comprising 80% nylon and 20% elastane material, and treating this fabric with a 33 water-resistant treatment. The breathable, waterproof adhesive is applied to the 34 underside of the fabric layer before or after treatment of the fabric with the water-resistant treatment.

Panels of multilayer fabric are then seamed using ultrasonic welding. The tape is 2 then cut, applied to the seams of the garment and laminated into place. A benefit of 3 using ultrasonic welding is that the resulting seams are less bulky than if the seams 4 were stitched, meaning that the tape will fit better and more effectively resist penetration of water through the seam, and that the resulting garment will be more 6 comfortable and rub less.
