Abstract

Problem to be Solved: To provide enhanced resolution from a mobile communication of a motor vehicle driver profile, with flexibility as to the frequency of data deposit to a fixed host device. Solution: A profiling device that uniquely utilizes 'on board' acceleration algorithms derived from a GPS (Global Positioning System) or GALILEO receiver to calculate and store a 'driver profile' which can be transmitted/ received to a remote host system at frequent or infrequent intervals. The algorithms may utilize the Doppler effect caused by changes in the acceleration of the vehicle and therefore avoiding the need to store and transmit longitude and latitude data.

<p>MOTOR VEHICLE DRIVER PROFILING DEVICE</p>
<p>Description:</p>
<p>A profiling device' using a system for determining motor vehicle driver behavior using vehicle acceleration comparisons over a fixed time period derived from the Doppler shift effect upon an on board GPS receiver. For the purposes of this document, the term GPS refers to both Galileo and GPS, or any other similar location tracking system.</p>
<p>Existing proposals/solutions require the use of a GPS receiver to calculate the vehicle's speed and position at regular periods of time, before transmitting this data to a central host (computer) using a communications medium such as GPRS. This has the disadvantage in that the relevant information (speed, latitude, longitude) is continuously transmitted, or logged and stored before being onwardly transmitted to an institution host server where further calculations are performed (e.g. to determine road charges). Such a system is described in Patent number:GB2407 192 Publication date:2005-04-20.</p>
<p>This new invention avoids sending all data (latitude, longitude) to the host server by pre-calculating the driver performance on board the vehicle and only transmitting a consolidated driver profile to the host server hence significantly reducing associated costs.</p>
<p>Since current placement devices have limited resources in terms of memory capacity and Central Processing Unit capacity it is not desirable to have to store cartographic details of all roads on board the device. The proposed profiling device would calculate a driver profile by utilizing the Doppler effect caused by changes in the vehicle acceleration and therefore avoids the necessity to use latitude, longitude and speed data.</p>
<p>To simplify manufacture and installation the profiling device would not interface directly with the vehicle systems.</p>

  1. <p>Claim: 1 A motor vehicle driver profiling device contained in a mobile
    telematics unit physically attached to the vehicle that stores and communicates a driver profile' to a remote host computer system at predefined time intervals.</p>
