Abstract

A transponder combined with an electrical power source into a single package resembling an existing battery. The transponder may be in the form of a radio receiver/transmitter combined with an audible device and a data storage element.

Description

POWERED TRANSPONDER
This invention relates to a power source and transponder combined into a single unit. The combined unit could be in a package resembling an existing electrical battery. The transponder could be in the form of a radio frequency receiver/transmitter possibly combined with an audible locating device perhaps in the form of a buzzer Devices for location of and for storage of information about the equipment that they are attached to are well known. They suffer from the disadvantage that they take up space beyond the envelope of the equipment and that they need to be somehow attached to the equipment as does any power source they might require.
An object of this invention is to provide a means of locating any existing device that utilizes a battery by sending a signal to the substitute battery from a transmitter. The device would then provide an audible indication of its location or could provide a return signal to allow more accurate location. The device could be fitted as a substitute for an ordinary battery and would replicate the electrical power source provided by an ordinary battery. Furthermore, the invention could be used to store information, potentially about the equipment in which it is installed in which case the electrical power source might be rechargeable.
Accordingly, this invention provides a transponder combined with a power source into a single unit in a package resembling an existing battery.
Preferably the shell is made from plastic material but might include metal or other material or might be made from a combination of materials. The shell might include features such as holes or areas of thinner wail, which may aid the transmission of a signal, be it sonic or electromagnetic. The battery might include an antenna, which may or may not be part of the shell.
The shell could be generally cylindrical with electrical terminals at each end but may be rectangular or any other shape and may have the terminals positioned on any face, possibly on the same face A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example with reference to the accompanying drawing in whicft FIGURE 1 shows a section through the combined unit.
FIGURE 2 shows a section through the device as Figure 1 but including electrical connections to the components As shown in Figure 1 the combined unit comprises an electrical power source 1 combined with a receiver/transmitter 2 housed in a shell 3 resembling the form of an existing battery. The resemblance to an existing battery includes the electrical terminals 4. A buzzer 5 is shown integrated with the receiver/transmitter 2. The combined unit is generally cylindrical in shape.
As shown in Figure 2, the terminals 4 are connected to the electrical power source 1 with conductors 6 The conductors 6 also connect to the receiver/transmitter 2 and the buzzer 5.
