Abstract

Isodibenzanthrone dyes are obtained by treating with alkaline condensing agents, with or without inert diluents, benzanthrone-Bz1-thioethers or substitution derivatives thereof having a free 2-position; alkyl-, aryl-, anthraquinonyl-, benzanthronyl-, &c. thioethers may be used. According to examples, isodibenzanthrone, practically free from dibenzanthrone, is obtained by heating benzanthrone-Bz1-p-thiocresylether or Bz1-Bz11-benzanthronyl sulphide with ethyl alcohol and caustic potash at 135-145 DEG C.; other alcohols or other alkalies may be used. Specification 20837/06 is referred to. Benzanthrone-Bz1-thioethers referred to above can be obtained by condensing Bz1-halogenbenzanthrones with mercaptans in the presence of alkaline agents and solvents or diluents. Benzanthrone-Bz1-p-thiocresylether is made by heating Bz1-chlorbenzanthrone with p-thiocresol and alcoholic potash. Bz1-Bz11-benzanthronyl sulphide is obtained by heating benzanthrone-Bz1-mercaptan with copper and naphthalene.
