Abstract

Dyestuffs are prepared by treating diaroyl-halogenperylenes with basic alkali or alkaline earth metal compounds at a high temperature, preferably in the presence of an organic solvent. According to the example, 4 : 10-dibenzoyl-3 : 9-dibromperylene is treated with powdered caustic potash in boiling aniline or with molten alkali; the product dyes cotton blue from a blue vat. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes examples in which (1) dichlorperylene, benzoyl chloride and aluminium chloride are heated together in boiling carbon bisulphide; the product crystallizes from nitrobenzene in brownish yellow needles; (2) dibenzoyldichlorperylene is heated to boiling with solid caustic alkali in quinoline; (3) dichlorperylene is heated in boiling carbon bisulphide with p-chlorbenzoyl chloride and anhydrous aluminium chloride; the product crystallizes from xylene in orange needles of m.p. 355 DEG C.; (4) di-p-chlorbenzoyl-dichlorperylene and powdered caustic potash are heated together in boiling quinoline; the product dyes cotton violet blue from a blue vat; (5) dichlorperylene of m.p. 280-1 DEG C. is mixed with p-toluic acid chloride, aluminium chloride and carbon bisulphide, and heated to boiling; the resulting di-p-toluyl compound is then heated with powdered caustic potash in boiling quinoline, yielding a compound which dyes cotton violet from a blue vat; (6) dichlorperylene and either o- or m-toluic acid chloride are heated with aluminium chloride in boiling carbon bisulphide; the intermediate products so obtained are then heated with solid caustic potash in quinoline, producing substances which dye cotton bluish violet and violet respectively; (7) the intermediate compound obtained by heating dichlorperylene with a -naphthoyl chloride and aluminium chloride in carbon bisulphide is treated with caustic potash in boiling quinoline; the product dyes cotton blue. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
