Abstract

The porous filling of vessels for storing acetylene, consists of cellulose, sawdust, kapok or other organic material which has been treated with solutions of reacting substances so as to produce within or on the material a substance which renders the filling capable of resisting local explosions without charring. For example, the filling before or after its introduction into the vessel, may be treated first with calcium chloride solution and then with water glass; or with a copper or zinc salt solution and then with a resin soap solution; or with barium sulphide and ferrous sulphate solutions. After treatment, the filling is washed to remove any substance that might react with the gas to be absorbed or with the liquid solvent.ALSO:The porous filling of vessels for storing explosive gases, such as acetylene, consists of cellulose, sawdust, kapok, or other organic material which has been treated with solutions of reacting substances so as to produce within or on the material a substance which renders the filling capable of resisting local explosions without charring. For example, the filling, before or after its introduction into the vessel, may be treated first with calcium chloride solution and then with water glass; or first with a copper or zinc salt solution and then with a resin soap solution; or with barium sulphide and ferrous sulphate solutions. After treatment, the filling is washed to remove any substance that might react with the gas to be absorbed.
