Abstract

The container 1 has a lid 5 comprising a stopper 7 which rests on a cooperating peripheral seat on the container, and comprising also a flange 6. The stopper itself has a projection 8 providing push-fit or snap-fit means for holding the lid in closed position. The container has also a peripheral flange or support surface 2, which overlaps the flange of the lid when this is in closed position. The container has a frangible tab 4 located on its support surface which will break off at perforations 3, when the support surface and therefore also the flange are bent to allow the opening of the container, therefore providing evidence that the container has been tampered with or opened.

The invention relates to a container, particularly a tamper evident container.
A problem with containers is that the lid may be opened prior to sale of the container, and the contents of the container may be tampered with. A solution to this problem is to provide a tamper evident container, which includes means to show if the lid has been opened prior to the sale of the container.
It is an objection of the invention to provide a tamper evident container.
The invention provides a container having a lid comprising means for holding the lid in its closed position and a flange for opening the lid, the container having a surface on which the flange rests when the lid is in its closed position, whereby the lid cannot be opened without bending the flange or the surface on which the flange rests.
If an attempt has been made to open the lid of the container prior to sale, the purchaser will be able to see that the flange or the surface on which the flange rests is bent, and so will know that the container has been tampered with.
The flange andlor surface on which the flange rests may be perforated. Bending the perforated flange/surface on attempting to open the lid will cause the flange/surface to break off at the perforations, so providing further evidence of tampering.
The means for holding the lid in its closed position may comprise any suitable means such as push-fit means, or snap-fit means.
The container may comprise at least one seal to keep the container airtight, and to prevent the container from leaking.
The seal may be provided by the push-fit means or snap-fit means. For example, the lid may comprise a stopper which is received in the opening of the container and the push- fit means or snap-fit means may comprise a projection which extends around the periphery of the stopper, thereby providing a seal. Using the push-fit means/snap-fit means to provide a seal simplifies construction, thereby reducing costs.
Alternatively, or in addition, the lid may comprise a stopper which is received in the opening of the container, and the container may comprise a surface on which the stopper rests when the lid is on the container, thereby providing a seal.
Alternatively, or in addition, the flange and the surface on which the flange rests may extend about the periphery of the container, thereby providing a seal.
The container may be made by thermoforn-iing.
The invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which:- Figure 1 shows a plan view of a container according to the invention; Figure 2 shows a side view of the container of Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a plan view of the container of Figure 1 without its lid; Figure 4 shows a side view of the container of Figure 1 without its lid; Figure 5 shows a plan view of the lid of the container of Figure 1; and Figure 6 shows a side view of the lid of the container of Figure 1.
As shown in the drawings, the container 1 comprises a peripheral flange 2 which extends outwardly from the upper edge of the container 1. A number of perforations 3 extend diagonally across one corner of the flange 2 to form a tab 4, which can readily be broken off.
The lid 5 also includes a peripheral flange 6, which extends outwardly from its upper edge. Below the flange 6 is a stopper 7, which is received in the opening of the container 1. The stopper 7 includes a projection 8 formed around its periphery. The profile of the container 1 beneath the flange 2 corresponds to that of the stopper 7 so that the stopper 7 is a push-fit in the container 1.
When the stopper 7 is inserted in the opening of the container 1, the lid's flange 6 rests on the container's flange 2. The diameter of the lid's flange 6 is less than that of the container's flange 2, and so the container's flange 2 projects beyond the lid's flange 6.
In order to remove the lid from the container, it is necessary to grasp the lid's flange 6, and lift the lid 5 so that the stopper 7 is removed from the opening of the container 1.
However, because the lid's flange 6 is resting on the container's flange 2, and the container's flange 2 projects beyond the lid's flange 6, it is not possible to do this without bending the lid's flange 6 or the container's flange 2. If either of the flanges 2, 6 is bent, this will be seen by the purchaser who will realise that the container has been tampered with. If the container's flange 2 is bent, the tab 4 will break off at the perforations 3, providing further evidence that the container 1 has been tampered with.
In the described embodiment, the lid 5 is removable from the container I, but it may be attached to the container 1, for example, by a hinge on one side of the container 1.
Moreover, the flanges 2, 6 extend around the entire periphery of the container 1, but they may extend around only part of the periphery, provided that the lid's flange 6 rests on the container's flange 2 so that the lid's flange cannot be grasped without bending one of the two flanges 2, 6.
The container 1 is made of plastics material, but may be made of any suitable material.
The container I is square, but may be any suitable shape.
The container 1 is made by thermo forming.

Claims (10)

  1. CLAIMS: 1. A container having a lid comprising means for holding the lid
    in its closed position and a flange for opening the lid, the container having a surface on which the flange rests when the lid is in its closed position, whereby the lid cannot be opened without bending the flange or the surface on which the flange rests.
  2. 2. A container according to claim 1, wherein the flange and/or the surface on which the flange rests is perforated.
  3. 3. A container according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the means for holding the lid in its closed position comprises push-fit means.
  4. 4. A container according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the means for holding the lid in its closed position comprises snap-fit means.
  5. 5. A container according to claim 3 or claim 4, wherein the container comprises at least one seal.
  6. 6. A container according to claim 5, wherein a seal is provided by the push-fit means or snap-fit means.
  7. 7. A container according to claim 6, wherein the lid comprises a stopper which is received in the opening of the container, and the push-fit or snap-fit means comprises a projection which extends around the periphery of the stopper, thereby providing a seal.
  8. 8. A container according to any of claims 5 to 7, wherein the lid comprises a stopper which is received in the opening of the container, and the container comprises a surface on which the stopper rests when the lid is in its closed position, thereby providing a seal.
  9. 9. A container according to any of claims 5 to 8, wherein the flange and the surface on which the flange rests extend about the periphery of the container, thereby providing a seal.
  10. 10. A container substantially as described herein or as shown in the drawings.
