Abstract
Thermoformed containers tend to tilt when stored on edge on a shelf in a supermarket. This thermoformed container (1) is equipped with a support (4) which provides the container with enough surface area to enable the container (1) to be stored on its end on a shelf. The support (4) and the container (1) are hingedly connected and both have complementary projections and/or recesses which holds the two parts together.
Description
Pack a g i.ng This invention concerns packaging particularly of the type
which comprises containers formed from sheets of thermoplastics materials.
Formed sheets of thermoplastjcs materials are widely used for packaging because they are inexpensive and can be rapidly produced in large numbers in a wide variety of shapes, for example to accommodate the particular articles to be packaged.
During the forming process, a sheet of thermoplastics material is heated, and a difference in pressure is applied to the opposite sides of the sheet whereby the sheet is pressed into contact with a suitable mold. The difference in pressure can be applied either by applying an increased pressure to one side of the sheet or by applying a vacuum to one side of the sheet.
The molded sheet is then removed from the mold, and in general it will then be trimmed to provide it with a peripheral rim to which in some cases a lid will be sealed after articles have been placed within the molded regions of the sheets.
Such packages can often be satisfactorily stacked one on another, particularly if the molded regions of the thermoplastics sheets support the packages in substantially parallel relation to each other. However, storing them on edge on a supermarket shelf, for example to display printed matter on the lids of the packages, does present problems because the peripheral rim to which the lids are attached tends to tilt the packages backwards. This tendency is also increased by virtue of the sloping sides of the molded regions of the sheets, which tends to tilt the packages back further. The result is that even if one package can be stood on end, further packages placed in front of it tend to topple a whole array.
According to the present invention there is provided a thermoformed container having a periphery substantially in a first plane, and a support member attached to the container which can support the container on a substantially horizontal surface with the said first plane substantially vertical.
The support member is preferably integral with the container, but it could be in the form of a separate item.
The support member is preferably hingedly connected to the container.
The container and the support member preferably include complementary regions which in use engage each other to hold them in position relative to each other when the container is placed on a horizontal surface with the periphery of the container substantially vertical. This can, for example, be in the form of a recess for receiving the support member.
The container and the support member are preferably thermoformed in a single operation.
The support member preferably has a peripheral region which when formed is substantially in the plane of the periphery of the container but when supporting the container is substantially perpendicular to the said periphery thereof.
The support member and the container preferably have complementary projections and/or recesses which engage to hold the support member relative to the container so that the support member can support the container with the periphery of the latter substantially vertical.
An embodiment of container in accordance with the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Fig. 1 is a part cut away perspective view of the embodiment from below; Fig. 2 is a part cut away side view of the embodiment; Fig. 3 is a part cut view of the embodiment from below; Fig. 4 is a part cut view of the embodiment from below prior to assembly; and Fig. 5 corresponds to the view of Fig. 4 but from above.
The package shown in the drawings is designed to store cylindrically shaped objects in a substantially cylindrical container 1 formed from two halves 2, 2' . However, the shape of the container is not relevant to the present invention and so it could be of almost any other shape.
The container 1 is made from a vacuum formed sheet of a thermoplastics material, for example a polycarbonate. The two halves 2, 2' of the container 1 a connected by a score line 3 which forms a hinge for opening and closing the container.
Formed with the two halves 2, 2' of the container 1 is an extension 4 which is connected to half 2 of the container 1 along a score line 5 which provides a hinged connection between the extension 4 and the half 2.
The extension 4 is in the form of a well with a peripheral rim 6 around a depression 7 as seen in Fig. 5, the depression 7 being substantially rectangular as viewed from above. The depression 7 has a substantially rectangular base 8, and two pairs of opposing sides 9,9' and 10, 10' . The sides 9, 9' are substantially flat. However, the Opposing sides 10, 10' have projections ii, ii' respectively which extend outwardly from the sides 10 and 10' for reasons which will subsequently be described.
A region 12 of the half 2 of the container 1 has a locking portion 13 for receiving and locking to the extension 4 when the latter is bent down along the hinge formed by the score line 5.
The locking portion 13 has four sides 14, 15, 16 and 17 which are substantially complementary to sides 8, 9, 10 and 10' of the extension 4, this including complementary depressions is, is' for the projections ii and 11' respectively. The dimensions of the extension 4 and the region 12, combined with the flexibility of the plastics material from which the container is made, enable the projections ii and 11' to engage the depressions i8 and 18'.
The relative positions of the projections ii and 11', and the depressions 18, and 18', are such that the peripheral rim 6 lies in a plane which is substantially perpendicular to the rim 19 around the halves 2 and 2' of the container 1, thereby providing a surface which enables the container 1 to be stood upright.
This can be improved by having the base 8 contact side 16 of the locking portion 13.
The extension 4 also has portions 19 and 19' which serve to prevent the extension 4 from being pushed to far into the region 12. -.5-
As indicated above, the shape of the container 1 can in general be selected as desired, and indeed it can be a simple tray with a peripheral flange to which a closure member can be attached.
However, in deciding the shape and size of the support member, consideration should be given to the shape of the container itself and the shape, size and weight of its intended contents so that the support member serves the intended purpose and substantially avoids toppling over of the containers when they are placed with the support member standing on a horizontal surface.
