Description
Title: Apparatus for Providing Meltable Material in a Molten State
Description of Invention
This invention relates to an apparatus for providing meltable material in a molten state and more particularly, but not exclusively, to such an apparatus for providing molten wax for use in building up a wax model for use in the manufacture of dentures or the like. However, the invention may have other applications, for example only, for use in making jewellery.
Typically a denture is made by a dentist making an impression of a patient's gums. A settable material such as plaster is cast into the impression in order to provide a plaster model of the patient's gums. Artificial teeth of porcelain or acrylic, for examples, are then arranged with respect to the plaster model, for example using a metal insert, and then wax is then built up around root portions of the artificial teeth and over the plaster model, to provide a wax model of a denture plate to be produced.
Conventionally wax for providing the wax denture model is provided in a molten state in a container, such as an insulated or heated container, and transferred to the plaster gum model using a suitable tool, e.g. a wax spoon, and then the wax is shaped as desired as it cools and solidifies. Alternatively, it is known to apply slivers of set wax and to use a heated wax knife to melt and shape the wax to provide the desired wax denture mould shape.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide an apparatus for providing meltable material in molten form including a chamber for containing.
a supply of material to be melted, a nozzle, a heating device to heat the nozzle, and means to urge the meltable material towards and through the heated nozzle, the heating device melting the material so that molten material is delivered toa H nozzle outlet, the apparatus including a shaping tool positioned adjacent the nozzle outlet to shape the molten material as it cools and solidifies.
By virtue of the present invention, meltable material, such as wax, may be melted, provided and shaped to a desired configuration, with a single apparatus, thus facilitating, for example, the building up of wax denture models.
Preferably the apparatus includes a body having a chamber in which the material to be melted, is contained, there being a plunger mechanically to act upon the material in the chamber to urge the material towards the heated nozzle. Preferably the plunger is hand actuated by a mechanical actuator arrangement.
The chamber may have an opening which may be closable by a lid, the opening enabling material to be melted to be placed in the chamber at least when the plunger is in a position most remote from the nozzle.
The heating device may be provided at or adjacent to the nozzle and may include at least one electrically operated heating element.
The apparatus may have its own power supply for the element, but preferably is connectable to a mains power supply to provide power to the heating element or elements.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a purely illustrative side view in cross section of an apparatus in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, an apparatus 10 for providing meltable material, such as wax, in a molten state at a nozzle outlet 11, includes a body 12 in which there is a chamber 13 for containing the material in a nonmolten state. In this example, the chamber 13 has an opening 14 which is closable by a lid 15. When the lid 15 is open, for example via a hinge arrangement, the chamber 13 may be loaded with meltable material, for example in the form of slivers or pellets or the like, at least when a plunger 18 is in a withdrawn position as indicated in dotted lines in the figure, when the plunger 18 is most remote from a nozzle 20.
The plunger 18 is moveable by an actuator rod 19 from the dotted line, remote, position towards the nozzle 20, where the nozzle outlet 11 is provided.
This is achieved by a mechanical actuator 25 which frictionally engages the actuator rod 19 when an operating trigger 26 is moved in the direction D shown in the drawing, relative to a handle part 27 which is rigid with the remainder of the body 12 of the apparatus 10. The operating trigger 26 is pivoted relative to the handle part 27 about the pivot indicated at A, whilst the actuator 25 is fixed to the operating trigger 26 at B. A coil spring 28 is provided so that when the operating trigger 26 is released, the spring 28 acts on the actuator 25 to move the trigger 26 back to the position shown. An opening through the actuator 25 is such that the actuator 25 tilts and frictionally engages the actuator rod 19 to urge it and thus the plunger 18, forwardly towards the nozzle 20, when the trigger 26 is moved in the direction D towards handle part 27, but the actuator releases the actuating rod 19 during the reverse movement, as the actuator tilts back to the position shown.
Thus it will be appreciated that by repeatedly operating the trigger 26, the plunger 18 may steadily and incrementally be moved from the dotted line, remote, position towards the nozzle 20, at least until a stop 30 at an outermost end of the actuating rod 19, engages with a stop tilt plate 31 provided by the housing 12.
The stop tilt plate 31, acts oppositely to the actuator 25, in as much as during forward movement of the plunger 18 as the trigger 26 is operated, the stop tilt plate 31 permits the rod 19 to move, but reverse movement of the actuator rod 19 would cause the stop tilt plate 31 to tilt and frictionally engage the rod 19 thereby arresting further such reverse movement.
In accordance with the invention, the nozzle 20 is heated by virtue of the provision of one or more heating elements 35 positioned at or adjacent to the nozzle 20, so that as the meltable material is urged towards the nozzle 20 by plunger 18 movement, the material become molten and thus molten material is delivered through the nozzle outlet 11, as the plunger 18 continues to move towards the nozzle 20.
The apparatus 10 has particularly been developed for providing molten wax for use in building up a wax denture model on a plaster model of a patient's gums. To facilitate moulding and shaping of the wax as it is applied to the model, the apparatus includes an application tool 40 which may conveniently be spoon shaped like a conventional waxing knife.
The tool 40 is preferably metal and becomes heated due to conduction, by the heating element or elements 35, or a separate tool heater element could be provided.
A power supply for the electric elements 35 may be provided via a switch 41 from a power supply which may be integrated with the apparatus 10, for example a battery, but preferably the apparatus 10 is connected to an external power supply via a power supply cord indicated at 42. By providing connection to an external power supply, the weight of the apparatus 10 may be maintained low, thus facilitating use particularly when fine control is required.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the configuration of the body 12, with the opening 14 and lid 15 is only exemplary. Furthermore, means other than the plunger actuating rod 19 for moving the plunger 18 to urge the material towards the heated nozzle 20 may alternatively be provided. For example, the plunger 18 may be driven by a powered motor means, such as an electrical motor.
When it is required to withdraw the plunger 18 from the full line to the dotted line position, for example when the chamber 13 of the body requires replenishment with non-molten material, the stop tilt plate 31 may be depressed in the region of the line indicated at 33, to release the plunger actuating rod 19 so that it may be manually withdrawn by moving the rod 19 by holding the stop 30.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
