Abstract

A method of controlling interference from a terminal at a base station (node B) comprises determining that the terminal has entered compressed mode and adapting the transmit power or data rate of the terminal such that interference at the base station stays below a predetermined level. In compressed mode, the time taken to transmit data is shortened in order to provide transmission gaps in which a terminal can make handover measurements. However, transmitting the data in a shorter time can increase the transmit power and cause interference peaks. In the invention, interference control may involve keeping the power or data rate below a maximum level set by the base station, having a reduced power or data rate set by the base station or having the network set a reduction in transmit power or data rate to be applied during the compressed mode.
