Abstract
241,985. Coxe, W. G., and Lagergren, G. M. July 28, 1924. Motor power plant.-An existing steam engine plant is converted into a combined steam engine and internal-combustion engine by removing the heads of the steam cylinders 1, 2 and mounting in the open ends of the cylinders combustion cylinders 26, 27 having pistons 28 mounted on extensions of the piston rods 14, 15. The pistons 28 have removable heads 32, and fuel is injected through a spray 33 by a pump actuated by an extension 38 of the stem of the steam slide-valve 20. The steam chest is provided with an air intake pipe 45 having a spring.closed valve 46, and is in communication with a chamber 49 encircling the combustion cylinder. A four-way valve and steam and compressed-air connections are provided so that the engine may be supplied with fuel and air, fuel and steam, fuel alone, air alone, or steam alone.
