Trenching; cutters.- In a wood-working machine more particularly intended for making staircase stringers, but applicable generally for grooving or like operations, a rotary cutter 30 is carried by rods 20 which slide in a support 15 capable of rocking about a pivot 18 on the head 14 of a column 5 which can be adjusted angularly and vertically in a socket 6, the depth of cut being determined by an adjustable gauge 39 attached to one of the rods 20. The angular adjustment is limited by stops 55 engaging an arm 54 clamped to the column, and the vertical adjustment is effected by means of a hand wheel 11. The support 15 also carries the driving means, such as a. motor 35, connected to the cutter by a belt disposed as shown, to permit the sliding movement of the cutter. The bracket 24 carrying the cutter spindle is connected to its supporting plate 22 by curved slots (not shown) so that a tilting adjustment of the cutter is afforded across the line of feed. The cutter comprises parting blades 45 and clearing blades 46. Adjustable pointers 47 with clamps 49 are mounted on the fence 3 at one side of the table, and a gauge 57 for determining the width of the groove is supported from a bracket 61 and can be turned up out of the way, being held by a spring 64. A circular saw 70 may be mounted as shown.
