Abstract
241,417. Huizinga, M. J. Dec. 17, 1924. Modulating systems and apparatus; combined transmitting and receiving arrangerrients; coupling oscillating and radiating circuits. - A highfrequency signalling system in which no carrier wave is radiated during the intervals between the signals, comprises a local or storage oscillating circuit and an output or radiating circuit connected to two nodal points in the local circuit, or to two points at which the voltage is always the same in magnitude and phase. Energy is radiated only when the frequency of the oscillations or the electric constants of the local circuit, or both, are modulated. As shown in Fig. 3, the local circuit comprises two inductances and two condensers C<1>, C<2>. Oscillations are produced by a high-frequency generator and a coupling coil. The aerial and earth are connected respectively to points B, A in the inductances at which normally there is no voltage difference. Two microphones M<1>, M<2> connected together to form a push-pull arrangement, such as two carbon containers on opposite sides of a single diaphragm, are shunted respectively across the two halves of the lower coil, for causing modulation. In the system shown in Fig. 4, the oscillations are caused by a thermionic valve. Modulation is effected by the two condensers C<1>, C<2> which are combined to form a push-pull condenser microphone comprising, for instance, an oscillating diaphragm interposed between two rigid plates. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the local circuit comprises a single inductance and condenser C. Oscillations of a frequency double the natural frequency of the circuit are caused by a high frequency generator and induction coil and tho output circuit is connected to two nodal points A, B in the inductance. Modulation is effected by suitable devices not shown. A receiver may be connected to the same aerial, a current limiting device being interposed to prevent the receiver from absorbing too much energy in the period of transmitting.
