Abstract
The prongs (3) of the Y shaped spanner/grip (1) slot/push over the sides of a pinch and turn release child-resistant safety cap (5) thus pinching the sides of the cap inwards and allowing removal through turning of the cap (5). (Fig 3). A segment of softer material (fig 6,6) such as a TPE or a natural rubber in the handle (2) allows for the opening of push down and turn release child-resistant safety caps (fig 6,10). This is achieved by placing the segment of softer material (6) against a push down and turn release child-resistant safety cap (10) and using the increased surface area offered by the Y shaped spanner/grip (1) to apply a downward force onto the push down and turn release child-resistant safety cap (10). The segment of softer material (6) provides frictional grip allowing the push down and turn release child-resistant safety cap (10) to turn when the y shaped spanner/grip (1) is turned. (Fig 6).
Description
Description
A device for aiding the removal of child-resistant safety caps.
Field of invention:
The present invention relates to a device to assist in the opening of child- resistant safety caps.
Background of invention:
Child-resistant safety caps are, for safety reasons, necessary on many household cleaning product containers such as bleach and limescale remover bottles.
Medication bottles containing pills or medicine, for the same safety reasons, are required to have child-resistant safety caps.
There are two main types of child-resistant safety caps. The first type is the pinch and turn release child-resistant safety cap, in which the lid is pinched inwards on two specific opposing sides thus disengaging the retention blocks allowing the lid to turn/unscrew and open. The second type is the push down and turn release child-resistant safety cap, in which an outer section of the cap has to be pushed down to engage the inner section thus allowing the user to turn the cap and open.
Whilst these caps do perform the task for which they were created, namely, to hinder access to potentially dangerous substances for young children and juveniles, they can also prevent other people, who they are not designed or intended to stop, from accessing the contents of the containers.
These people include those with arthritic hands and fingers, those with a lack of dexterity and grip, and the elderly. This can leave people unable to take medication or unable to clean their homes with the correct products.
Summary of invention:
The invention is a device for aiding removal of child-resistant safety caps. In the most basic form the device consists of a Y shaped spanner/grip (1). The prongs (3) of the Y shaped spanner/grip graduate from a narrow to a wider opening from the handle (2) to the end of the prongs (3) thus allowing for different widths of pinch and turn release child-resistant safety caps to be opened.
The prongs, of the Y shaped spanner/grip, sloVpush over two opposing sides of pinch and turn release child-resistant safety caps thus pinching these sides of the cap inwards and allowing removal through turning/unscrewing of the lid.
The device therefore provides aid to the user because they no longer have to pinch and turn the cap at the same time.
A more advanced version of the invention consists of the aforementioned Y shaped spanner/grip (1) with a segment of softer material (6), such as such as a TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), a cross-linked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer attached to the handle. This segment of softer material is used to aid the opening of push down and turn release child-resistant safety caps. This is achieved by the user placing the segment of softer material against a push down and turn release childresistant safety cap and then using the increased surface area offered by the Y shaped spanner/grip's handle to apply a downward force onto the push down and turn release child- resistant safety cap. The segment of softer material temporarily moulds around the raised details (opening instructions and grip) on the top and outer edge of the cap and thus provides grip through friction allowing the user to turn/unscrew and open the cap in one movement.
The device can provide aid to the user by giving an increased surface area to apply pressure to push downwards on the cap whilst the softer segment of material grips the lid through friction allowing those with a lack of dexterity to turn the cap without having to physically grip it.
The Y shaped spanner/grip may vary in size.
The Y shaped spanner/grip may vary in appearance provided the basic function remains.
The Y shaped spanner may be manufactured from any plastics material, species of wood, man made fibreboards, ceramics or metal. In addition the inner edges of the prongs (3) may be dual shot moulded/ over moulded with such as a TPE, a cross-linked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer.
Alternatively a separate moulding/part/insert of such as a TPE, a crosslinked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer may be mechanically bonded, adhesively bonded or bonded by means of a solvent based glue to the inner edges of the prongs (3).
In addition the inner edges of the prongs may have ridges/teeth to provide grip.
In addition the segment of softer material (6) such as a TPE, a crosslinked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer, thus providing cushioning and frictional grip, may be attached to the handle (2) by dual shot moulding/over moulding with the Y shaped spanner/grip (1). Alternatively a separate moulding/part/insert of such as a TPE, a crosslinked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer may be mechanically bonded, adhesively bonded or bonded by means of a solvent based glue to the handle (2) thus allowing the device to open push down and turn release child-resistant safety caps through the frictional grip provided.
In addition the segment of softer material (9) such as a TPE, a crosslinked elastomer, a natural rubber or other elastomer, thus providing cushioning and frictional grip, may be attached to the handle (2) by dual shot moulding/over moulding with the Y shaped spanner/grip (1). Alternatively a separate moulding/part/insert of a TPE or a natural rubber may be mechanically bonded, adhesively bonded or bonded by means of a solvent based glue to the handle (2) thus providing cushioning and a frictional grip.
