Abstract

The invention comprises a sun visor for a vehicle comprising at least two planar members 5 adapted to counter the sun's rays, said two planar members be pivotable along one edge adjacent to the vehicle windscreen. The planar members may include means for alleviating UV rays from the Sun.

Description

241 0231
SUN VISOR
The present invention relates to sun visors. In conventional vehicles the usual padded sun visor is fitted as standard by most motor manufacturers.
It is strange that motor manufacturers have, in general, over the past years placed so much importance on road safety and yet the conventional sun visor has remained virtually unchanged since first introduced and yet good vision of the road is of utmost importance especially with so many new vehicles being fitted with very powerful headlights plus ever increasing amounts of UV rays as the Ozone layer diminishes.
According to the present invention therefore there is provided a sun visor for a vehicle comprising of at least two equally spaced planar members adapted to counter the sun's rays, said two planar members being pivotable along a top..
edge thereof from an adjacent vehicle windscreen. : . A. In a preferred embodiment one of said planar members is pivotable from an at.:.
rest position to an engaged position wherein together planar members reduce.
the sun's rays. In a preferred embodiment a sun visor is provided wherein one ' . . planar member which is positioned adjacent to the windscreen of the vehicle is provided with means for preventing UV rays from the sun from impinging upon the eye of the beholder. It is preferred at least one planar member is changeable to a side window. Eli
Alternatively the planar members should be provided with a support with adhesive backing adapted to be secured towards the top or an upper portion of a vehicle windscreen, preferably the first planar member (the one nearest the windscreen) is of a lighter tint and the second one of a darker tint in order 3() to control the amount of light entering the eyes of the beholder. It will be seen that a twin screen tinted sun visor may be manufactured and, or, constructed in a tinted flexible plastics material which will not present a hazard either to the driver or passenger and will replace the normal padded sun visors fitted to vehicles with emphasis on health and safety.
The device will substantially reduce or eliminate glare from the sun, the reflected glare from snow and glare from oncoming vehicle headlights when lowered into a position in front of the eyes. It is desirable to state that it is proposed to provide a polarised film to one of the screens in order to substantially reduce, if not eliminate, the ultraviolet rays from the sun hence the emphasis on health and safety for use of a twin screen tinted sun visor. It will be noted from Figure 1 of the drawings which accompany the specification not only can the two screens be lowered and raised separately but that screen two can be turned towards the side window to prevent glare from the sun a similar in action to the padded sun visors in current use. . ..
In the case of Figure 2, the device has been designed for the accessory market to be fitted as an extra to existing motor vehicles already on the road, although the second screen cannot be turned to the side window, the existing it' I';' 50 padded sun visor can be used for this purpose without any interference from : this new device.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a part schematic view of the device which it is proposed could be fitted to the vehicle at time of manufacture.
Referring to Figure 1 this shows a part schematic view of a device in which the fixing pivot (2) is as seen in most vehicles and round rotating bars (3) which support the tinted screens (5). The fixing clips (4) support the rotating fixing bars (3) which support the planar members (5) (tinted screen).
With reference to Figure 2 shows a part schematic view of a device which has been designed specifically for existing vehicles already on the road and which. . does not require the removal of the existing padded sun visors in order to I. install the new device (similar number means similar device as herein before.
set forth). I.. a:.:
A support mounting (7) with adhesive backing (not shown) is positioned towards the top of a windscreen of a vehicle. A round mounting support (8) is provided with mounting clips (9) for securing two tinted screens (5) jig 75 Figure 1b shows a fixing clip (4) whereas Figure 1c shows transverse view of a rotating fixing bar which allows the two screens to hang vertically together or park side by side Figure 1C.
Figure 2 shows a part schematic view of the device to be produced for existing motor vehicles and provided as a vehicle accessory for both right hand drive and left hand drive vehicles.
Figure 2b shows support mounting (7) with a series of mounting clips (9) thereupon. A support bar (8) extends along the length of the support mounting (7) Figure 2c shows an end view and transverse view of a mounted clip (9) to hold the broad bar (8) to the support mounting (7).
Figure 2d shows a transverse section through a support mounting (7).
Figures 3a to c shows a part schematic view of a further device according to. :--
the present invention. ::

Figure 2 shows a part schematic view of a device which has been designed specifically for existing vehicles already on the road and which does not require the removal of the existing padded sun visors in order to install the new device (similar number means similar device). At; J94 i f'I'
/,' A support mounting (7) with adhesive backing (not shown) is positioned towards the top of a windscreen of a vehicle. A round mounting support (8) is provided with mounting clips (9) for securing the two tinted screens (5) IDS With reference to Figure 3 the fixing means 4 and 6 are as in figures 1b and 1c respectfully. With reference to Figures 3a there is provided a pair of end stops (10) with apertures(11) for receiving the rotating round fixing bars (3).
Whereas these are shown in Figure 3a they need not be because it is only necessary that the apertures (11) are formed in the body of the clip (10) . A l lO pair of screw threads (12) extend through the clip (10) and impinge upon the bars (3).
It is shown in Figure 3b each of the planar members (5) is secured to the fixing bars (3). .
With reference to figure 3b of the drawings there is shown a planar member (5) formed intrically with fixing bar (3). I use at the ends of the fixing bars (3) . are secured in the clip (10). ::: :.:.
It is shown particularly in Figure 3c is a side view with ghost lines of a twin screen tinted sun visor in accordance with the present invention. There is shown a side view of a clip (10) and planar members (5) with ghost lines (13) showing the planar members in an alternative (up) position. s /]
In use the planar members (5) can be moved to any position any UV sun blocking position so long as they are pivoted above the bar (3). The set screws (12) impinge upon the ends of the bars (3) such that the planar members (5) can be moved at will.
It will be appreciated that various modifications and alternative forms of design, fabrication and/or construction and materials may be used in addition to those already described in the specific embodiments herein described. . a.: : Age:. An.. a.. :.:. L I' fry
