Abstract

A disposable cover for the mouth of a drinking vessel includes a depending skirt for gripping the outside of the vessel, the skirt consisting of a plurality of overlapping lugs. It may be made of paper or card and grip by its own resilience, allowing its use on a range of vessel diameters. The lugs may be formed by cutting the edge portion of the cover. The cover may have a perforated hole for a drinking straw and may be printed with advertising. It is intended to protect the drink from insects. When the cover is not in use, the lugs may be folded up against its underside.

The invention registered as the Bugcap@) is a design for a disposable cover to place on circular rimmed vessels, particularly glasses, to protect drinks from flies, wasps, mosquitoes etc. when consumed in outdoor environments such as beer-gardens, B-B-Q's, picnics etc. The force generating inward pulling grip is created by overlapping lugs which will facilitate compatibility with diverse sizes of vessels found at drinking establishments everywhere... no need for special cups or glasses! The point of contact and grip with the vessel is near the tip of the lugs. Therefore the outer circumference of Bugcap does not have to match that of the vessel it protects...it just has to be bigger. The inner circumference is thus a variable aperture formed by the extension of the lug ends, and is modified by the girth of the vessel it grips. Un- extended and at rest the overlapping lugs will revert to flat- pack position and the inner aperture will be at its smallest. It is safe to say that glasses with circumferences falling between the inner and outer circumferences of the Bugcap can be protected with the 1 size device. Bugcap) may be manufactured in other sizes in order to accommodate extreme diameters of glass rim. Pressure given from the inwardly gravitating interlocking lugs keep the Bugcap on. The device has been designed for manufacture in either paper or light card (with possible synthetic options), as long as the material exhibits a certain degree of elasticity so as to enhance the grip on the vessel. The top will have a punch-out perforation hole for a straw, and it is envisaged that sponsors such as breweries and soft drinks companies etc. will advertise their brands with logos on the top face. Hygiene protection and the saving of spoiled drinks will make this disposable device an indispensable item for health-conscious consumers.

Claims The BugcapO 1. The BugcapO is a universal disposable cover to

protect drinks contained in a diverse range of circular rimmed receptacles from flying insects and their related health hazards.
2. The overlapping lug mechanism serving claim 1 see attached Figs 1 - 5 incl.) provides a variable inner aperture and inward pulling force to ensure sufficient grip on almost all of the many glass and cup designs in common use.
3. It is preferred that the Bugcap) as described in claim 1. have a perforated spot for punching out a hole for a straw.
4. Bugcap as described in claim 1. is designed to be made of paper and/or light card which exhibit some elastic properties. The economic and other advantages of other synthetic options may decide the eventual material of mass production.
