240,915. Stoakes, H. A. T. July 8, 1924. Lawn-mowers. - A grass cutter for use on lawns &c. comprises oscillatory blades coacting with a fixed horizontal blade having a front cutting-edge. The machine comprises side plates a connected at the rear by the spindle b of two driving-drums c and at the front bythe fixed horizontal blade d which may be shaped as shown or may have a straight or curved front edge. T-shaped or like cutters e are pivoted on a cross-bar f and jointed to a bar g which is rapidly reciprocated by a pivoted lever j provided with arms engaging cam plates k within the drums c. They are held down by a crossbar adjustable by screws i. The heads or cutting parts of the cutters e may be detachably connected to the shanks. They are double-acting and are curved so as to have a cutting action like shears and like scythes. A scraper keeps clear the gap between the rollers c. A front roller o is carried by pivoted arms adjustable by means of screws q. Rotary vanes may be provided to sweep the cut grass into a box carried by the side plates a. Propelling or guiding handles are provided, and a motor may be attached. According to the Provisional Specification there may be two fixed knives or a single oscillatory blade, each edge of the movable blades may be straight, and the driving-lever may be forked to engage cams on opposite sides of a single roller, drum, or disc.
