Abstract
A support device 10 for a workbench 1 is described, with a workpiece holder 2A, 2B where the device 10 is mounted on a support frame 4. The device 10 possesses a workpiece support member 11, with a pair of arms extending 13A, 13B from the support member 11. A channel 14, 15 is provided for each arm 13A, 13B connectable to the workbench support frame 4, where the arms 13A, 13B can move in a reciprocating manner. A ground engaging post 16 is provided to support the support member 11. In use, said support member 11 is supported by each arm 13A, 13B and associated channels 14, 15 and is spaced from the workbench workpiece holder 2A, 2B and is generally coplanar therewith.
Description
Title: Support Device for Workbench The present invention relates to a
support device for a workbench.
It is often desirable to cut a length of timber on a workbench, e.g. of the type sold under the trade mark "Workmate" by Black & Decker. Such a workbench would normally have a workpiece holder, usually in the form of sliding jaws, mounted on a support frame. If the timber to be cut is very long, the workbench can become imbalanced and topple over or otherwise make working difficult.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a support device for a workbench of the type having a workpiece holder, usually in the form of sliding jaws, mounted on a support frame comprsmg: A) a workpiece support member, B) at least one arm extending from the support member, C) a channel for each arm connectable to the workbench support frame in which said arm can reciprocate, and D) a ground engaging post to support the support member off the ground, in use said workpiece support member being supported by said arm and channel generally planar with and spaced from the workbench workpiece holder.
Preferably the a generally U-shaped frame provides a pair of arms and a base connected to the workplace support member which reciprocate in a pair of channels connectable to the support frame. Preferably the ground engaging post is connected to the U-shaped frame base, optionally by a releasable bracket to vary the length the post extends from the U-shaped frame base.
Preferably a locking device is provided to lock the position of the or each arm relative to its channel.
Preferably the workpiece support member is an elongate member extending in a direction normal to the or each arm.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing showing a perspective view of a support device on a workbench.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a workbench 1 having a workplace holder, in the form of sliding jaws 2A,2B operable by handles 3A,3B, mounted on a collapsible support frame 4. Workbench I is of a type well known in the art (e.g. of the type sold under the trade mark "Workmate" by Black & Decker) and need not be described further. Jaws 2A,2B can grip a workpiece such as a length of timber 5 which needs to be cut, with the timber 5 resting on horizontal frame members 6A,6B In accordance with the invention there is shown a support device l O. Support device 10 has an elongate workpiece support member l l planar with frame members 6A,6B.
Support member l l is connected by spacers 12A,12B to a generally Ushaped frame 13 having a pair of arms 13A,13B and a base 13C.
Arms 13A,13B reciprocate in a pair of channels 14,15 mounted generally horizontal on the collapsible support frame 4. Arms 13A,13B can be releasably locked in any desired position in channels 14,15 by locking nuts 14A,1SA respectively.
Support member 11 extends in a direction normal to the arms 13A,13B.
A ground engaging post 16 is provided to support the support member 11 off the ground.
Ground engaging post 16 is connected to the U-shaped frame base 13C by a releasable bracket 17 to vary the length the post extends from the Ushaped frame base. Post 16 may have a foot 18.
In use the workpiece support member l l is supported by arm 13A,13B and channels 14,15 generally planar with and spaced from the workbench workpiece holder at variable distances as required. Timber S is supported over a greater distance of its length so that the workbench will not topple. The timber may conveniently be cut at point X, e.g. with a saw.
If desired a spacer to sit on support member 11 may be provided substantially equal to the thickness of jaws 2A,2B to create a support surface planar with the top of jaws 2A,2B.
If desired a second support device 10 could be positioned in channels 15, 15 on the other side of the workbench 1.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
Claims (7)
