Abstract
A bottle for a fizzy drink has a plunger system for minimizing the air space above the drink, the system including a part (c) for sealing against the bottle wall above the surface of the drink, a part (b) defining a drinking straw with a stopper (d), which part is used to lower the sealing part (c) and a part (a) for resting on top of the bottle through which the straw (b) passes.
Description
Fizzy Bottle - C7- Often carbonated drinks lose their fizz very quickly,
particularly if the bottle in which they are contained is re-opened frequently. Loss of fizz is also a problem under high temperatures. The Fizzy Bottle' offers a solution to the first problem7 and helps to avoid the second one. This dual functionality and elegant simplicity of the invention is in contrast to previous devices designed to retain fizz (such as GB2263462) which rely on collapsing bottles and other such clumsy methods that are difficult to manufacture, and do nothing with regards to the problem of high temperatures eliminating the fizz of carbonated drinks.
The 'tizzy bottle7 consists of an outer case made out of PET7 other plastics or similar water- proof materials. Mounted inside this casing is a plunger system which rests on the surface of the drink7 eliminating space for the carbon dioxide gas (responsible for the fizz) to leave the solution. Furthermore7 the principles of gas expansion help to avoid the problem of high temperatures eliminating the fizz from the drink.
Drawing sheet I of I shows two figures describing the above.
Figure 2 shows the outer case of the 'tizzy bottle7. Fig 2a represents a carbonated drink having being placed into the cylindrical outer case. However7 other cross-sectional shapes Figure 1 represents the plunger system which retains the fizz of the drink. This is to be placed into the outer case. Part la will rest on the top df the outer case as an external seal. This will be of a slightly larger width/diameter than the outer case7 and made of soft plastic7 such that it can be compressed and forced into the top of the outer case to act as a firm seal7 that will remain in place unless significant force is applied. This external seal is not however essential.
Part lb is a firm and thick plastic straw7 sealed with a stopper id. This straw can be adjusted vertically up and down through the gap in part la. The straw is attached to part 1c - a seal of the same cross-sectional dimensions and shape as the outer case. Other similar materials could be used for either the straw or the seal. Using the plastic straw the seal is lowered to create a seal on top of the liquid meniscus. Some of the drink may even rise up slightly into the plastic straw. It is essential that the stopper be removed during this process. Once the seal is in place7 the stopper is replaced.
Subsequently7 when a drink is to be taken from the bottle7 the stopper Id is removed and the drink sucked using the straw. The seal is then pushed down to the new liquid level7 and the stopper replaced once again.
Importantly7 the seal does not need to be restrained mechanically as might have been previously thought. If the gas in the liquid was to move the seal (thus leaving the carbonated drink) the carbon dioxide would have to expand to fill the space it created. This requires work to be done. This is impossible unless the liquid was for example heated to an extremely high temperature.
Furthermore7 if the temperature around the bottle does rise slightly any expansion work done by the gas would act to cool the system7 encouraging the carbon dioxide to return into the drink solution - thus retaining the fizz.
Claims (4)
- Claims Page,) 1. The 'Fizzy Bottle' uses a simple plunger device supportedby an outer case to eliminate physical space in the bottle and control temperature, via vertical movement of the plunger.
- 2. The above devices can be made from a variety of materials that meet the specifications as previously described.
- 3. A straw is used to evacuate the drink and is a component of the plunger device as previously described.
- 4. The above claims allow a carbonated drink to retain its effervescence over an extended time period.
