Abstract

A freestanding case for transport or display of goods has a bottom provided with one or more supports formed by inter-engaging upstands folded up from opposed first and second base panels of the case. In one embodiment one of the base panels gives a pair of upstands disposed as a channel, each said upstand having slots extending in from the distal edges of the upstands, while the other of the base panels gives a pair of upstands also disposed as a channel at right angles to that of the first base panel, each said upstand having slots extending across and up from the base panel to receive the upstands of the first base panel.

FREESTANDING CASES
The present invention concerns freestanding cases, particularly advantageous for use as heavy-goods point-of-sale display and bulkfreight transit packaging. Known cases of this s kind provide collation, transport and display, for customer selection at retail outlets, of a variety of heavier retail items such as drinks, products in jars or cans, cleaning products, dry goods and the like, as well as finding use as general freight transit units. To provide adequate support for the load exerted by the goods in transit and in store, as well as for ease of handling by forklifts or dolleys, such heavy goods transit and display packaging usually lo incorporates or is used in conjunction with timber pallets or expanded polystyrene or similar inserts. The present pack has been designed to eliminate the need for these inserts and pallets, substituting strong corrugated-board fitments in their place.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a freestanding case for transport or display of goods the bottom of which is formed by interengaging upstands folded up from opposed first and second base panels of the case, for example to extend to the plane of the bottom edges of opposite sides of the case.
In the construction shown the case is formed as a sleeve of which lower parts of front and rear panels fold inwards to form halves of an inner base while leaving corner legs, the support or supports being formed in a pair of separate base panels secured in the lower part of the case, for example by opposite edges of one or both of the panels being formed into upstanding flaps over which extensions of the bottom edges of opposite sides of the case are folded. A strong multi-layer construction of the base of these sides results.
Alternative constructions are possible however. In particular an inner base panel folded from the lower part of the sleeve may constitute one of the panels in which the inter- engaging upstands are formed, only a single separate panel being used, or the panels in which the upstands are formed may be folded from different lower parts to overlap each other, the upstands inter-engaging as they do so.
I, BP-09-0360 The inter-engagement of the upstands may be as convenient but a particularly strong construction is given if one of the base panels gives a pair of upstands disposed as a channel, each said upstand having slots extending in from the distal edges of the upstands, while the other of the base panels gives a pair of upstands also, disposed as a channel at right angles to that of the first base panel, each said upstand having slots extending across and up from the base panel to receive the upstands of the first base panel. Here the principle is the same as the way bottle dividers for cases fit together, except that only one 'cell' is being formed.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a blank for a display case; Figs. 2 and 3 are die-cut blanks for first and second base panels; Fig. 4 shows the assembly of the blanks of Figs 2 and 3; and Fig. 5 shows the insertion of the assembly into the erected blank of Fig 1.
In Fig. 1 the blank has panels to form front back and sides of the eventual case. The front has a removable part V for display and an innerbase half flap N; the rear has a corresponding half flap O. The sides have extensions or flaps P and Q with associated lock tabsRandS.
In Fig 2 'Fitment A' the upstands are at flaps D and E. Opposite edges have lock tabs J. J 2s and K, K and cut outs which provide locking slots at T. U. In Fig 3 'Fitment B' the upstands are at flaps F and G and opposite upstanding panels or flaps H and I are provided with slots L, L and M, M. Assembly of fitments A and B is shown in Fig 4, and in Fig 5 completion of a display case by insertion of the assembled fitments into the glued fold- flat sleeve C formed from the blank of Fig I and opened up. The procedure is: . BP-09-0360 Stage One. Fitment Assembly 1. Take fitment 'A' the smaller of the two die-cut blanks.
2. Fold the two small flaps 'D' and 'E' located in the cenke of the blank up through ninety degrees.
3. Take fitment 'B' the slightly larger die-cut blank.
4. Fold the two small flaps 'F' and 'G' located in the centre of the blank up through ninety degrees. Pre-fold flaps 'H' and 'I' of fitment 'B' through ninety degrees, ready for the next operation in the sequence.
S. Position fitment 'A' centrally above fitment 'B' and interlock both fitments by pushing them firmly together. Ensure as you do this that the tabs 'J' and 'K' of fitments 'A' locate in the slots 'L' and 'M' of fitment 'B'.
Stage Two. Unit Assembly 6. Open the fold-flat sleeve formed from the pre-folded and glued blank 'C' into a square shape and position it upside down in the assembly area.
7. Fold the large flaps 'N' and 'O' on the base of the display unit down through ninety degrees to form the display unit inner base.
8. Take the 'A' and 'B' fitment assembly and holding flaps 'H' and 'I' position it centrally over the base of the display unit as illustrated and push the fitment assembly firmly down until it locates against flaps 'N' and 'O'.
BP-09-0360 9. Fold the small flaps 'P' and 'Q' on the base of the display unit through one hundred and eighty degrees, locate the locking tabs 'R' and 'S' into the slots 'T' and 'U' formed by the assembled fitments 'A' and 'B'. The base of the display unit is now securely assembled.
lO. Turn the display unit the right way up and remove the perforated front panel 'V'.
The unit is now ready to be filled. When full the unit should be protected with either an optional transit shroud or by shrink-wrapping prior to palletisation and shipping.
The advantages in provision of heavy-goods point-of-sale display and bulkfreight transit lo cases are clear, allowing: 1. Collation, transport and display, for customer selection at retail outlets, of a variety of heavier retail items such as drinks, products in jars or cans, cleaning products, dry goods etc., and 2. Use as a general freight transit unit.
Similar packs are in use, which employ polystyrene inserts or timber pallets to support the load exerted by the product. The present pack has been designed to eliminate the need for these Inserts and pallets, substituting strong corrugated-board fitments in their place.
The unit, which is conveniently a three-piece construction, is made totally from corrugated material and has advantages over polystyrene and timber products because: The pack is supplied in flat form before assembly, saving space in both transit and storage.
À The case Is made in one piece.
It is quick and easy to assemble.
The entire corrugated pack is 100% recyclable.
Excellent aesthetics contribute to maximum product promotion.
Standard I/., '/: and full pallet sizes can be made available as well as bespoke sizes to customer requirements.
BP-09-0360 Available in a range of corrugated board grades or if required similar foldable sheet material.
Can include an integral "Fliptop" header unit when used for in-store display purposes.
Extremely robust throughout the supply chain and during in-store display.
