Abstract

A high backed chair includes, as part of the back, a music stand which is movable from a stored position. When moved from the stored position, the music stand is suitable for supporting sheet or book music. In one embodiment, the music stand comprises three assemblies, each of which may move relative to the other two, allowing adjustment of the height and angle of the music stand. Preferably the music stand has a locking catch 32 to retain it in the stored position and one or more friction devices to maintain the height and angle when in use.

Description

COMBINED CHAIR AND MUSIC STAND
This invention relates to a combined chair and music stand.
Music stands are well known articles of furniture for supporting sheet or book music while an instrument is played. Music stands usually consist of a central vertical column with a tripod base and a flat surface at the top to support sheet or book music. The angle and height of this surface may generally be adjusted to suit the instrument player. Music stands may be either of the permanently erected or fold away type. Permanently erected stands have the advantage that they are stable in use, but have the disadvantage of requiring storage space when not in use. Fold away music stands take up less space when stored, but are generally less stable in use.
According to the present invention there is provided a combined chair and music stand comprising a high backed chair, a music stand which forms part of the back of the chair when stored, means for releasing and moving the music stand away from the fixed part of the chair back and means for adjusting the height and angle of that part of the music stand on which the sheet or book music is placed during use.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the chair with the music stand ready for use.
Figure 2 shows a front view of the chair with the music stand stored.
Referring to the drawing, the combined chair and music stand comprises a high back chair with a music stand which may rotated about a horizontal pivot rod. The music stand consists of three assemblies, each of which may move relative to the other two.
The upper assembly consists of an upper rail 10 containing the pivot rod 12 and two tubular vertical columns 16.
The middle assembly consists of a flat member 18 which forms the top surface of the music stand when in use and a number of vertical columns including a central vertical column 20 and two outer vertical columns 22 which slide inside the two tubular vertical columns 16 of the upper assembly.
The lower assembly consists of a horizontal member 24 which forms part of the arm bow 26 of the chair when the music stand is stored and a central tubular column 28 which slides over the central column 20 of the middle assembly. When in use as a music stand the horizontal member 24 forms the lower surface on which the sheet music is placed The lower assembly of the music stand has vertical pins 30 in horizontal member 24 which engage in holes 32 in the arm bow 26 of the chair when the music stand is stored, thereby locking the music stand in the stored position.
The music stand is released from the stored position by lifting the lower assembly, thereby disengaging the pins 30 from the holes 32, and rotating the entire music stand to the required angle. The pivot rod 12 includes a friction locking device which may be adjusted by means of a key.
The overall height of the music stand may then be increased if desired by sliding the middle assembly of the music stand away from the pivot rod 12, this sliding action being provided by the two columns 22 sliding inside the tubular columns 16 of the upper assembly. The two tubular columns 16 are provided with friction locking devices, allowing the middle assembly to be secured at the desired height.
Similarly, the central tubular column 28 is provided with a friction locking device, allowing the height of the horizontal member 24 which supports the sheet music to be adjusted by sliding the central tubular column 28 over the central column 20 and securing it at the desired height.
To store the music stand the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.

Claims (9)
