Abstract
The bird table for feeding wild birds comprises a stand 1 and a housing 2 supported on top of the stand having a removable tray 5 on which bird food can be placed.
Description
DESCRIPTION
"A BIRD TABLE"
The present invention relates to a bird table for feeding wild birds. More specifically, the present invention relates to a bird table of the type which comprises an open or covered platform on which bird seed or other bird food can be placed.
Conventional bird tables for feeding wild birds comprise a platform on which loose bird seed and other bird food can be placed. A raised lip is usually provided around the perimeter of the platform to prevent bird placed on it from being blown off by the wind and a roof or cover may be provided over the platform to prevent the food from getting wet. The platform is mounted on a stand or post which is either free-standing or embedded in the ground.
A major disadvantage associated with conventional bird tables is that the platform cannot be easily cleaned and over a period of use there is a tendency for spoiled food and seed chaff to build up. Where this waste food becomes wet, as it usually does, it tends to become encrusted over the surface ofthe platform and is very difficult to remove. Bird tables tend to be heavy andlor are usually secured in some way to the ground to prevent them blowing over in strong winds and this further exacerbates the problem of cleaning the platform as the bird table cannot be easily manocuvred into a position where the platform is easily accessible.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a bird table for wild birds which obviates or substantially mitigates the aforementioned problem. À
According to the present invention there is provided a bird table for feeding wild birds comprising a stand and a housing supported on top of the stand, which housing houses a removable tray on which bird food can be placed.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention the housing is provided with a raised lip around the perimeter thereof which serves to locate and retain the tray.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a bird table in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing there is shown a bird table comprising a stand 1 (only partially shown) supporting a housing 2 having a post 3 at each of the four corners thereof on which a roof or cover 4 is supported. The housing 2 is square in shape and defines a recessed interior into which a tray 5 is received. As shown in the drawing the tray 5 is removed from the housing. The sides of the housing 2 serve to locate and retain the tray 5.
In use the tray S is located in the housing and the surface of it is covered with bird food in conventional fashion. If, however, after a period of use the tray 5 has become encrusted with waste food and dirt it is a simple matter to lift it out of the housing to be cleaned. The tray 5 itself is constructed of a relatively lightweight and easy to clean material, such as plastics. Thus cleaning the tray is a much easier than is the case for the integral platform of a conventional bird table.
Claims (4)
1. A bird table for feeding wild birds comprising a stand and a housing supported on top of the stand, which housing houses a removable tray on which bird food can be placed.
2. A bird table according to claim 1, wherein the housing is provided with a raised lip around the perimeter thereof which serves to locate and retain the tray.
3. A bird table according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the tray is comprised of a plastics material.
4. A bird table substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
