Abstract

Mobile sewage and/or waste treatment plant comprises a plurality of modules (1-8) for such treatment, at least one of which modules (7) comprises a membrane treatment unit (9) having a plurality of membrane treatment panels. The plant may be carried on a lorry.

Description

SEWAGE AND/OR LIQUID WASTE TREATMENT The present invention relates to
sewage and/or liquid waste treatment.
Membrane treatment plants for sewage and/or liquid waste have been established for many years. However, these have traditionally been built as permanent plants and designed for large populations, usually from plant cast in concrete. These require considerable time to design and build. Modification, repair or upgrade of these plants is difficult, requiring duplication of services to allow spare capacity.
Further, where large mobile populations of humans occur, for example at music festivals, construction sites, refugee camps or armies on manocuvres, on failure of existing plant, pollution occurs due to swamping of local infrastructure.
Existing mobile sewage treatment works, are physically large, lack integration and have low fixed capacity and discharge quality. These plants cannot begin immediate treatment, due to the need for establishment and build up of bacteria, and can initially pollute and smell.
According to the present invention, from one aspect, there is provided mobile sewage and/or liquid waste treatment plant, comprising a plurality of modules for such treatment, at least one of which modules comprises a membrane treatment unit having a plurality of membrane treatment panels.
The modules could include at least one of a storage module, a screening module, an air blowing module, a holding tank module, a sludge dewatering module and an electrical control unit module.
Conveniently, the modules could be received in a portable container.
According to the present invention from another aspect, there is provided mobile sewage and/or liquid waste treatment plant, comprising a plurality of modules for such treatment, the modules being received in a portable container.
According to the present invention from another aspect, there is provided a method of providing a sewage andlor liquid waste treatment plant, comprising transporting together a plurality of modules for such treatment to a site.
The present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of an example of plant according to the present invention; and Figure 2 is a side elevation view of the example.
The following example of the present invention enables a mobile membrane sewage treatment plant, which can incorporate all necessary stages or combinations thereof for the treatment of human, animal or industrial sewage. Such treatment could discharge water to a standard allowing reuse of the water for irrigation or building services. The modularised units, in any combination required, can be delivered to site with a small footprint which allows them to be rapidly deployed on the back of lorry trailers and arranged to suit the available geographical layout. Due to the plant being based on the design of a standard ISO container, traditional handling by road, sea and rail is possible.
The plant is immediately able to treat waste due to "seeding" with existing bacteria combined with membrane filtration and aeration.
As capacity varies, additional containers can be added or removed to suit. Long-term site users are able to re-deploy, sell on the units and re- coup their outlay. Due to high levels of integration, self-monitoring and automation, only low levels of unskilled operator attendance is required.
Figures 1 and 2 show a modular mobile sewage and/or liquid waste treatment plant based on the design of a container according to International Standard Organisation (ISO) standards. More particularly, the plant comprises modules mounted within such a container as follows: module 1, which provides a storage area which permits space for the storage of Remountable equipment during shipment, spares and maintenance tools; module 2, which provides a control unit containing electrical controls and monitoring equipment receiving and distributing electrical power, there being provision, if required, for a chiller unit; module 3, which provides a screening room to break sewage down to small particle size and remove solids for separate disposal or treatment; module 4, which provides holding tanks for storage of sludge or final discharge; module 5, which provides a sludge dewatering and drying filter press; module 6, which provides air blowers - which could be mounted within one ofthe "wet" modules to allow additional cooling and reduce noise; module 7, which provides a treatment tank containing a membrane unit 9 and additional air diffusers 10; and module 8, which provides externally mounted pipework accessible through a doorway.
Membrane treatment unit 9 comprises a plurality of adjacentmembrane treatmentpanels for sewage and/or liquid waste treatment and of a type known in the art - see for example EP-A- 0 510 328, EP-A- 0 602 560, EP-A0 662 341, EP-A- 1 121 971 and US-A- 5 772 831. In the unit 9, there occur oxygen enrichment and biological growth on micro-porous surfaces of the membrane treatment panels to cause filtration of water passing through the membranes. Additional diffusers 10 provide further oxygen enrichment during periods of low flow or to suit demands and nature of sewage.
Item 11 is a sludge decanting port connected either to a tanker or a sludge holding tank in use of the plant.
Items 12 are baffle plates. During shipment, the treatment tank provided by module 7 is drained to the top of the baffles. This ensures the membranes are kept damp, preventing damage to the surfaces from drying and helping to maintain the surface bacteria. s
Item 13 is a transport level drain, to drain the treatment tank to the top level ofthe baffle plates.
Item 14 is Remountable pipework, physically required to be above the top level of the container during treatment to create airlocks. During shipment, pipework 14 is removed and stored in module 1.
Item 15 is a trailer used to transport the container by road. During short treatment periods, the container with its modules may remain on board. For long-term use, the container would be moved on to hard standing.
It will be appreciated that a different combination of modules may be used from that shown in the drawing - and in the above example a fewer number of the modules described may be used.
