Abstract
A liner for use with a commode (12) comprises a sac (10) of waterproof plastics material of a size to be received within the receptacle of the commode (12). The sac (10) can be secured to the upper surface of the commode (12) using a adhesive tape (14) or by other similar means. A tab (18) at one edge of the sac (10) enables the stuck-down edge of the sac (10) to be peeled away from the commode easily. The sac thus forms a lining for the receptacle of the commode (12) which can be removed with the contents of the commode easily and hygienically. The liner may also be adapted to fit inside a chamber pot or childrens' potty.
Description
LINER FOR USE WITH A COMMODE
The present invention relates to an improvements in the
field of commodes and chamber pots.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a liner for use with a commode, chamber pot or potty, comprising a sac of waterproof material of a size to be received within the receptacle of the commode, chamber pot or potty, and means for removably securing at least part of the edge of the sac around its opening to the body of the commode, chamber pot or potty around the periphery of the receptacle thereof so that the sac forms a lining for the receptacle which can be removed with the contents of the commode, chamber pot for disposal after the commode, chamber pot or potty has been used.
Preferably, the sac is of plastics material.
The means for removably securing the sac around the periphery of the receptacle of the commode, chamber pot or potty may be in the form of adhesive tape or of areas of adhesive formed on the material of the sac around its open edge or in the nature of an elastic band either formed separately or integrally with the edge of the sac.
In a preferred embodiment, the sac is formed with a layer of liquidabsorbing material on its interiors so as to facilitate disposal of largely liquid waste.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the drawing.
The disposal sac shown in Figure 1 is a bag 10 of waterproof plastics material of a size and shape to line the receptacle of a commode 12, the upper surface only of which is shown in the drawing. The sac 10 need not be a - 2 - close fit in the receptacle but should, preferably, be at least of similar capacity so as to minimise the possibility of stretching, tearing or overflow.
In its simplest form, illustrated in the figure, the edge of the sac 10 around the periphery of the receptacle opening 16 can be secured to the upper surface of the commode using adhesive tape 14. Alternatively, the edges of the sac 10 can be provided with areas of contact adhesive or other adhesive of the kind used for repositionable self-adhesive products, so that the edges of the sac 10 can be secured to the surface of the commode 12 around the receptacle opening.
In either case, the sac 10 is positioned in the IS receptacle so as to form a lining and the edge of the sac secured by whichever form of adhesive is used around the periphery of the opening 16. Ideally, the edges of the sac 10 are secured to the body of the commode 12 before a seat, if any, is lowered or positioned on the body of the commode so as to minimize the risk of adhesive tape, in particular, adhering to the skin of the user.
Once the commode has been used, the sac 10 is simply removed from the commode 10 and the mouth of the sac 10 closed using any conventional arrangement which is convenient, for example, a drawstring or separate ties.
The closed sac 10, and its contents, can then be disposed of simply with other clinical waste.
As shown in the drawing, the sac 10 is advantageously provided with a tab 18 at one edge which allows the stuck down edge of the sac 10 to be peeled away from the body of the commode. The tab 18 may be in the form of a strip of tape which can then be wrapped around the neck of the sac 10 to close it. - 3
The advantage of this arrangement is that it makes disposal of waste from a commode more acceptable to nurses, care workers and others entrusted with the care of those who need to use them. It also eliminates the risk of contamination from waste material because the bag is sealed before being taken out of the commode.
In addition, the risk of airborne infection arising from carrying a full commode through hospital wards or the home is avoided and, because the waste material does not lo come into contact with the receptacle, it may be possible to avoid or reduce the use of hazardous substances, currently required to keep the commode clean.
Further, the patient can remove the bag without risking contamination, allowing them to maintain a sense of dignity in connection with what is still regarded as a very personal function.
In a further embodiment, not shown, the sac 10 may be provided with an absorbent lining of material similar to that used in feminine hygiene products or disposable diapers. Where the sac 10 has such a lining it serves to absorb any liquid waste, at least partially, making spillage as the sac 10 is removed from the commode 12 less likely.
It will be appreciated that a disposal sac of the kind described may be used not only with conventional forms of commode but also with chamber pots and with potties used by children. Where the sac is intended to be used with a chamber pot or potty, it may be preferable to use an elastic band, either provided separately or integral with the edge of the sac to secure the edge of the sac over the edge of the pot or potty. - 4 -
