Abstract

239,859. Hanson, B. M. W. May 21, 1923, [Convention date]. Turning.-The thread of a screw or tap is ground by a tool having several annular cutting- edges or serrations, which operate simultaneously on several convolutions of the thread and are so formed as to provide spaces between the grinding- tool and the convolutions of the thread. The serrations are of different sizes or shapes, so that as the tool passes along the work, each serration removes a small portion from the thread, the last serration grinding the thread to size. The serrations are shaped by means of diamond points 35 - - 37, mounted on a slide 38, and movable across the faces of the serrations by screws 42. When grinding a thread of large lead angle the axis of the grinding-tool is inclined perpendicularly to the lead angle; the wheel is then trued whilst so inclined.
