Abstract

A disposable wire dispenser for wire used to tie concrete reinforcing rods together comprises a housing containing a spool fabricated from plastic material and being wound with 2kg of wire, the housing having an opening on a first face through which the spool may be inserted into the housing and a cover which closes off the opening, the component parts of the disposable cable dispenser being secured together by a plug inserted into a second face which is diametrically opposed to the first face. The housing may be provided with two loops allowing it to be attached to a user's belt whilst in use and may comprise at least two dispensing apertures allowing wire to be dispensed by either a left- or right-handed user. For ease of use, the spool may be rotatably mounted within the housing.

Description
This invention relates to a wire-dispensing reel. The reel is made of plastic and is designed to fit onto a trouser type belt and worn on the waist. The reel comprises of a case with belt loops, a spool that has been wound with wire, a cover, which encases the spool and a plug. The wire is of the type used to tie together reinforcing steel. The case of the reel has two large apertures, one on each side, which facilitate left or right handed operation. The reel is a one use, disposable or recyclable unit.
At present, most tying wire is supplied to construction sites in 25kg coils. The worker cuts of a length of wire from the large coil then goes about his particular task. When this length of wire has been used, the worker has to leave his task and take another length of wire from the large coil. This time consuming process is repeated throughout the working day. Sometimes the worker finishes his task without finishing the length of wire. In this instance, the wire is discarded and becomes wasted and a potential trip hazard. Large coils of wire are also frequently left, outside overnight and become rusty, unusable and ultimately wasted.
An object of this invention to provide each worker with a supply of wire from the reel, that enables him/her to perform his or her task without the interruption of having to replenish their length of wire. The worker simply pulls the wire from the reel as required. Also, because the wire remains in the reel unless used, waste is cut dramatically and safety is increased.
Apart from the wire, which is totally consumable, the reel is made of recyclable plastic. It is designed to be for one use only. When the wire has been used up, the plastic components are either disposed of or set aside for recycling. Then the worker simply straps on a new reel and continues with the task. The reel contains 2kg of wire.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: SHEET 1/2
FIG 1 shows the component known as the plug.
FIG 2 shows the component known as the case with large aperture and belt loops. FIG 3 shows the component known as the spool onto which the wire will be wound. FIG 4 shows the component known as the cover and spindle.
FIG 5 shows a rear view of the reel with recycling instruction text.
FIG 6 shows an opaque view of the reel assembly.
SHEET 2/2
SECTION A-A shows a sectioned view through the reel.
FIG B (2:1) shows where the cover and case of the reel lock together and the position of the plug when assembly is complete.
FIG C (2:1) shows an internal rib formed on the case. This rib is repeated on the inside face of the cover and its purpose is to facilitate minimal contact with the spool.
FIG D (2:1) shows a small protrusion on the edge of the cover. This protrusion is designed to fit into a equal sized gap in the case to ensure the the unit is assembled in the correct fashion.

Claims (4)

Claims
1. The reel is designed to be "one use" only and is made up of a case and cover, inside of which is a spool and a plug, which fits into the rear of the case, ensures the components do not come apart once assembled and the reel is made of recyclable ABS plastic and the spool is pre-wound with 2kg of wire of the type used for tying of concrete reinforcing steel bars.
2. The case of the reel as claimed in claim 1 has two loops on the rear to accommodate a belt of trouser type, which allows the reel to be worn around the workers waist.
3. On two side of the reel as claimed in claim 1 are large apertures through which the wire can be drawn as required and the two apertures allow both left handed and right handed operation.
4. The spool inside the reel as claimed in claim 1 turns freely allowing the wire to be drawn easily from the reel as required.
