Abstract

239,548. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Campbell, A., (Administratrix of Campbell, W.)). Sept. 8, 1924, [Convention date]. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for a turbine or other rotating shaft comprises a ring 7 secured by a flexible door 9 to the casing 2 and having a flange 8 extending towards the surface of a member 4 secured to the shaft. The disc 9 is clamped between rings 13, 14, which are secured by studs to the casing 2, and is secured to the ring 7 by a ring 10 and studs. The radius of the flange 8 is slightly greater than that of the middle of the surface of the disc 9 acted on by the fluid pressure, in order that the balance of pressure may tend to move the ring 7 towards the member 4. Wear of the flange 8 is prevented by means of carbon or other wearing buttons 22 let into the ring 7.
