Abstract
239,266. Mitchell, F. G., and Parker, L. P. May 29, 1924. Automatic-feed weighers fitted to storage hoppers.-The discharging apparatus of a coal &c. bunker is actuated by a motor which is controlled by hand-operated means. The bunker is arranged at one side of and above a railway track and discharges by means of a rotatable table d and a shoot s into the tender of a locomotive. The motor driving the table is controlled by a switch o placed within reach of the fireman of the locomotive. The hinged bottom s<1> of the shoot s is connected by a rope w to a pivoted lever t. A weight v is adjustable on the lever t and is set to permit the descent of the bottom s' when the receptacle contains the desired quantity of material. The free end of the lever t normally rests on and effects the closure of a switch that controls the motor independently of the switch o, so that when the lever rises the motor stops. After discharge, the bottom rises, the lever descends, and the motor is restarted. In a modification, the receptacle s may be suspended from the lever t and the hinged bottom may be held closed by a catch controlled by lever mechanism which is actuated by hand after the discharging apparatus has been stopped automatically. In a further modification, the table delivers into a self-righting tipping container suspended from a counterbalanced lever such as t, Fig. 3, and locked in the upright position by means which is released when the lever tilts. The release of the container and the reclosing of the motor circuit are effected under the control of time delay devices. The switch controlling the motor circuit is actuated by the return of the container to normal position. The main switch o may be actuated only by a special key belonging to each locomotive and this may cause the number of locomotives to be printed on a card on which the weight of coal delivered is also recorded. According to the Provisional Specification a valve in a discharge shoot. may be used instead of the table d.
