Abstract

A histological specimen jar and lid combination in which a seal is created and maintained by a force and stress put into the top 7 during closing. The sealing ring 2 is in the form of a frustrum of a cone having inclined inner and outer faces 5. The rim of the container 4 cooperates with the inclined outer face 5 of the sealing ring 2, causing deformation or doming of the top 7 as the lid is screwed down onto the container. This deformation results in the application of long-term outward radial pressure on the seal 6. Sealing pressure is enhanced and maintained by the doming effect. Any collapsing of the container rim 4 or the frustrum 5 from sustained contact pressure would be compensated for by the relaxing of the dome or crown in the top 7.

Description

( HISTOLOGICAL SPECIMEN JAR
The invention relates to a pot and lid used for long-term storage of liquid solutions including Formalin.
Such pot and lid combinations are well-known, but have proved unsatisfactory for long-term sealed storage of aggressive or volatile fluids.
The object of this invention is to provide a product with a seal between the cap and lid which does not just rely on the resilience or memory of the material used in the frustrum. 'the invention is of a lid which deforms or domes when tightened, so as to provide constant radial pressure to the seal, even if the seal point becomes dented or flattened during long-term storage of fluid.
The jar and lid are made of plastic.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the top and side view of an assembled pot.
Figure 2 shows the side view.
Figure 3 shows the critical sealing area, with the threads omitted for the sake of clarity.
As shown in Figure 1, the lid 8 has a pattern on the outer, upper edge 1.
The dent or frustrum ring which creates the seal is also visible 2.
Figure 3 shows the jar rim 4 engaging with the cap frustrum 5. As the cap is tightened and the rim moves up the angle of the frustrum, the pressure on the seal 6 is increased.
The shape and size of the frustrum is designed so that as sealing pressure is increased, the middle section of the cap 7 begins to dome, thus creating long-term outward radial force on sealing point 6. The long- term aspect of the seal is thus not reliant only on the frustrum edge 5 collapsing as pressure is applied, but also on the force applied to the seal by the domed area 7 of the lid. The top section 7 is manufactured basically flat. The domling occurs on tightening.

( CLAIMS
1. A container and lid, where the lid includes sealing means arranged such that when the lid is secured to the container a centre portion of the lid is displaced laterally so that a constant radial. force is applied to the seal.
2. A container and lid as claimed in claim 1, where the lid includes formations which improve hand grip when securing the lid to the container.
