Abstract

A device for making bait filled mesh bags, comprising a stock of meah tubing 12, a tubular former 10 to fit within the mesh tubing and a compactor 16 which is slidably receivable within the tubular former, the compactor having a length greater than that of the tubular former. The compactor is preferably a shaft that fits with clearance into the tubular former. The shaft may have a handle at one end and the opposite end to the handle preferably has a portion of larger diameter than the former. The portion of larger diameter fits snugly into the former to act as a piston.

Description

) - 1 - ANGLING BAIT
The present invention relates to a device for making bags containing bait.
Anglers often cast ground bait into the water to attract fish to the vicinity of a fishing line. The bait can be cast by hand or it may be launched by means of a catapult. Furthermore devices have been used which include a 10 container that opens under water to release the bait.
It has also been proposed to fill bags made of a water soluble mesh, such as PVA, with bait so that the bag dissolves when immersed in water to release the bait that it 15 contains. The bags are made of mesh tubing which is hard to fill because the walls of the tube tend to collapse on themselves. To avoid this problem, it is known to use a device as zo shown in Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings. Here, the water soluble mesh tubing stock 12 is stored around a rigid tubular former 10, for example a cardboard or plastics hollow cylinder. As the mesh is water soluble, the device is normally stored within a protective container, which is 25 not shown in the drawing. One end of the tubing stock is slid off the end of the former and a knot 14 is formed in it to close off one end of the bag. Next bait is poured down the former 10 to fill the bag formed by the length of mesh tubing slid off the end of the tube 10. The mesh tubing is 30 then knotted twice and is cut between the two knots. This forms a closed bag containing bait and leaves a knot at the end of the mesh tubing stock in readiness for the operation to be repeated.
75 According to the present invention, there is provided a device for making bait filled mesh bags, comprising a stock of mesh tubing, a tubular former to fit within the mesh
tubing to permit bait to be introduced into the mesh tubing, and a compactor slidably receivable within the tubular former and having a length greater than that of the tubular former. The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1, as earlier described, is a perspective view lo of a known device for making mesh bags filled with bait, Figure 2 is a perspective view of a device of the invention which additionally includes a compactor, and Figure 3 shows the device of Figure 2 with the compactor fitted within the tubular former.
The device of the invention is essentially the same as that shown in Figure 1 and to avoid repetition like parts have been allocated the same reference numerals. The invention resides in the addition of a compactor 16, this JO being a rod that is slidable within the tubular former 10 and is longer that the former 10. The compactor 16 preferably comprises a shaft that fits with clearance within the tubular former 10, the shaft having a handle at one end and at the other end a portion of larger diameter than the 25 shaft that fits snugly in the tubular former and acts as a piston. In use, the required quantity of bait is first poured into the tubular former 10. The user next introduces the JO compactor 16 into the tubular former 10 and while placing his hand over the opposite end of the tubular former 10 compresses the bait by driving the compactor 16 deeper into the tubular former 10. The user then releases his hand from the opposite end of the tubular former 10 and, using the s compactor 16, pushes the compressed bait out of the tubular former 10, this being made possible by the compactor 16 being longer than the tubular former 10. The bait displaced
- 3 - from the former 10 entrains with it a length of mesh tubing from the stock 12. The length of mesh tubing containing the bait can now be twisted to form a compressed pellet of bait and can be knotted to keep the bait within the bag.
The device of the present invention offers a first advantage in that the mesh tubing stock is used more economically because less tubing is required for a given amount of bait. A further advantage is that once the bag lo dissolves in water, the compressed bait bursts out of the bag and is better distributed within the water.
