Abstract
An ornament comprises front and rear profile members 2,3 having different profiles. The front profile member 2 is positioned in front of the rear profile member 3 and is of a material which is at least partially transparent such that the profile of the rear profile member 3 is visible through the front profile member 2. This allows both profiles to be appreciated simultaneously.
Description
AN ORNAMENT
The present invention relates to an ornament for 5 displaying two sets of related information.
It is an aim of the present invention to provide an ornament which can display clearly and elegantly two sets of information, particularly profiles representing 10 graphs. Accordingly the invention provides an ornament comprising front and rear profile members having different profiles, the front profile member being positioned in front of the rear profile member and being of a material which is at least partially transparent 15 such that the profile of the rear profile member is visible through the front profile ember.
The invention therefore allows the two profiles to be clearly and simultaneously displayed. The profiles 20 could, for example, correspond to related graphs. In one particular example the profiles could represent the the torque and power curves of an engine such as a motorbike engine. By superimposing these profiles in accordance with the present invention an ornament can be 25 created which is characteristic of a certain type of engine. Equally, other profiles could be displayed including facial or full figure profiles, cityscape profiles, 30 comparisons of annual sales figures/ profit margins etc. In order for the information to be displayed, it is only necessary for the two profiles to be clearly seen.
Therefore, it is only important for the area of the 35 front profile member overlaying the profile of the rear profile member to be substantially transparent. The front profile member need not therefore have uniform
light transmissibility across its area, but could, for example, have a portion thereof in the region of the edge of the rear profile member which is more transmissive than other parts While both trout and rear profile members can be transparent/ semi transparent, it is preferable that the rear profile member is more opaque than the front profile member. More preferably still, the rear profile 10 member can be completely opaque. This is advantageous as the contrast in light transmissibility between the two profile members enhances the distinction between the two profiles thereof.
15 Preferably, the rear profile member is at least partially reflective and more preferably still, has a substantially mirrored surface. This allows the profile of the front profile member to be reflected in the rear profile member and thus enhances its visibility against 20 the rear profile ember. The rear profile member could thus be made of a reflective, e.g. polished, metal such as stainless steel, chrome plated mild steel or aluminium. Alternatively it could comprise a reflective film on a glass substrate i.e. a mirror.
Preferably the edge of one or both of the profile members is finished in such a way as to enhance its visibility. This can be done, for example, by polishing, bevelling, plating, etching etc. This finishing can be 30 done manually or by machine.
The front profile member can be made of, for example, acrylic plastic or glass.
35 Preferably, the front profile member comprises a material arranged for enhanced transmission of light from the edges thereof. This increases the visibility of
the front profile and thus more clearly displays the contained information. Such a material could be, for example, 'hive Edge' Altuglas (Registered Trade Mark) acrylic plastic available from Atofina. This is a well 5 known material which enhances the visibility of its edges so chat they appear to glow As such this material would be desirable for use in the present invention.
As another means of distinguishing the front profile lo from the rear profile member, the front profile member is preferably coloured.
While the front and rear profile members can be spaced apart from each other, preferably they are mounted in 15 mutually facing contact. This allows the rear profile to be clearly seen through, e.g., a semitransparent front profile member and prevents a double image of the front profile being seen when a reflective rear profile member is used.
Preferably, the profile members are attached to a mounting post with common fastening means, such as a screw or the like.
25 Equally, the front and rear profile members can be clipped or glued together.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention shall now be described, by way of example only, with reference 30 to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig 1 is a front view of an ornament in accordance with a preferred embodiment the present invention; 35 Fig 2 is a side view of the ornament shown in Fig 1; Fig 3 is a plan view of the ornament shown in Fig
- 4 - Fig 4 is an exploded view corresponding to Fig 1; and Fig 5 is an exploded view corresponding to Fig 2.
5 Figures 1 to 5 show generally the ornament 1 of a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The ornament 1 comprises a front profile member 2 mounted against a rear profile member 3 so that the two are in mutually facing contact.
The profile members 2, 3 each have a corresponding pair of mounting holes 5a through which decorative screws 5 pass into threaded bores in corresponding mounting posts 6 in order to mount the two profile members 2, 3 to the 15 mounting posts 6. The mounting posts 6 are then secured to a base 4 using screws 7 from underneath the base 4.
The front profile member 2 is made of a coloured acrylic plastic and is therefore transparent. The plastic used 20 is so-called 'Live Edge' plastic which is arranged to enhance light transmission through its edges and thus makes the profile edge 2a of the front profile member 2 appear to glow.
25 The rear profile member 3 is made of polished stainless steel. The profile edge 3a of the rear profile member 3 is polished, and could also be bevelled, to direct light towards the viewer and thus enhance the visibility of the profile.
It can therefore be appreciated by those skilled in the art that both the front and the rear profiles Ha, 3a may be clearly observed by the viewer and are easily distinguishable from one another. These could for 35 example represent respectively the torque and power curves versus engine speed for a motorcycle engine and thereby be an appreciated gift for a person owning a
motorcycle having that engine. The base 4 may carry a caption relating to the profiles. Alternatively a company name or slogan can be inscribed on the base 4 and the ornament can be used as a promotional item.
it will furthermore be appreciated that many variations from and modifications to the described embodiment are possible within the scope of the invention. For example, the rear profile member 3 is shown as being 10 taller than the front profile member 2, although there is no disadvantage in having the front profile member 2 taller since the fact that it is transparent ensures that both profile edges may nonetheless be clearly seen and distinguished.
