Splitting-apparatus. - In an evening or evening and grading machine, the knife, the rolls, and the paths of movement of the latter relative to one another are arranged so that proper clearance is automatically maintained between the upper roll and the knife behind the knife edge at all times. A fixed knife 1 is inclined to the horizontal and has recessed flanks 5. The vertically movable resiliently mounted roll 3 is smaller in diameter than the vertically adjustable roll 2 and is positioned with its axis on the side of the vertical through the upper roll away from the knife edge. Recesses in the roll 3 house spring-urged fingers 9, pivoted on a rod 11 secured to the roller bearing, which to support the stock at the cutting point as the rolls separate rise above the roll surface through cam tail pieces 20 contacting with a rod 22 adjustable by screws 30, 31 about a bearing on a clamp secured to the machine frame.
