Abstract

A radio communication device 201 includes a transmitter under the control of a controller 223, operating a control loop to set the transmitter power. The controller is limited to set a maximum transmitter power by a threshold generator 221 and the threshold is determined by tariff information from processor 219. This information may be received from the communications system, from permanent storage in the device, by user input or over the internet. The threshold may also be set as a function of time of day, traffic loading or user input e.g. receipt of a discount for acceptance of a lower power maximum. Reduced charges encourages the use of lower power levels, thus the amount of noise and interference in the system can be reduced. The invention is applicable to a CDMA system such as UMTS.
