Abstract

238,235. Paquier, M., and Despommiers, R. Aug. 6, ]924, [Convention date]. Pigments.-The brilliant particles found in fish are extracted by treating the fish with a liquid which is substantially immiscible with water nor attacks the particles. Suitable liquids are petroleum, gasoline, petroleum ether, benzine, amyl acetate and sulphuric ether. The liquid is agitated with the fish &c. and the particles separated as a practically anhydrous paste by subsequent repeated decantation. In the case of sulphuric ,ether, which is miscible with water to a small extent, the volume of saturating liquid (and consequently of water) in the paste may be reduced by draining, centrifuging, &c. or the paste may be mixed with excess of castor oil, agitated and the oil separated by any method. The particles may be used as a pigment in the manufacture of nacreous washes or mixed with varnishes &c.
