Circular machines.-In control mechanism wherein for some or all of the needles there is a slider such as 14 operated by a jacquard card, provision is made for causing individual needles to be moved to any one of several positions. The jacquard card is preferably a slotted band 30 carried by a grooved roller 31 driven by ratchet gear from a cam moving with the needle-cylinder. Selectors 15 with slotted ends 26 strung on a rod 25 bear on the imperforate parts of the band 30 or are allowed to drop distances depending on whether the steps 27 - - 29 engage the ends of the slots in the band or the selector ends pass right through. The selectors which have dropped are moved horizontally by a driving-bar 23 with steps 34 - - 36 engaging, with variable lostmotion, a depending projection 33. Each selector thus projects the stepped end of a slider 14 into a needle trick. According to the distance moved forward, the corresponding step 16 - - 19 rides on a rotary cam 11. When the step 16 is engaged, the slider clears the corresponding needle jack, as shown, but when other steps are engaged the corresponding needle will be moved into one of several alternative positions to vary the pattern of knit. The sliders are returned by the engagement of their butts 24 with a projection 22 on the bar 23, which is reciprocated by a grooved cam 42.
