Abstract

A stair nosing or other elongated architectural member, such as a skirting board or doorway architrave, adapted to carry a lighting element (6) for decorative, security or safety purposes, includes a channel (3) from which the lighting element radiates light directly and further includes a transparent or translucent part (2) formed integrally with an opaque part (4), the said parts being so disposed that the transparent or translucent part (2) collects light from the lighting element and by a combination of reflection and refraction additionally radiates light indirectly through the transparent or translucent part (2). The direct light beam can illuminate a safe path to be followed, for example through passageways, gangways, corridors etc., while the indirect beam draws particular attention to potentially hazardous features such as steps and sharp edges in or alongside the path.
