As a result a protective device that protects the contact strip disposed in the cable-harness connector against damage, soiling and moisture from assembly onwards can be provided in a very simple and inexpensive way and avoiding disposal problems.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Contact protection on cable-harness side The invention relates to a protective device for a contact strip of a cableharness connector that is disposed in a main body designed as a housing and contains at least one contact element that can be coupled to contact elements of a terminal strip, wherein the protective device comprises a protective element that can be transferred from a position preventing the coupling to an assembly position that makes coupling possible.
Prior art Such protective devices are generally designed in such a way that the contact elements as they are disposed in cable-harness connectors or in their housing are covered by means of a cap that partly surrounds the contact elements. Such caps attach to the contact elements either by friction or by means of a press fit.
These caps are, as a rule, designed as dust protection caps and are mounted on the contact strip during the preassembly of such cable-harness connectors. As a result, the contact elements are completely covered. For the fitting operation, the cap is removed again for the purpose of cable-harness examination and is then mounted yet again. The end customer then removes the dust protection cap finally and passes it to the trash or the trash separation.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Disadvantages of the prior art Recycling of such components, which are, as a rule, composed of plastic, is at present impossible for cost reasons. As a result, appreciable disposal problems arise in the logistics sector, but also in the field of the costs arising for this purpose.
A further substantial disadvantage of the protective caps described here is that they have to have a bore since they cannot be plugged onto the contact strips without such"venting"since, when pushed onto the contact strip, the rim of the protective caps already rests tightly against the contact strip and the air accumulated inside the protective caps cannot escape without the provision of such a bore. As a result, there is, however, the danger that moisture and dust can consequently penetrate through said bore, which was intended to be avoided as such by mounting such a dust cap.
In addition, such protective devices are expensive both to manufacture and to dispose of, and they pollute the environment.
Object of the invention The object of the invention is to provide a protective device for contact strips disposed in cable-harness connectors that avoids the disadvantages of the prior art and can be produced very inexpensively and can easily be detached from the cable-harness connector.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
Achievement of the object The object of the invention is achieved in that the protective element comprises a film that can be detachably mounted directly on an outer rim of the main body and completely spans the contact strip disposed in the housing.
Advantages of the invention The protective device according to the invention for a terminal strip having the characterizing features of Claim 1 has the advantage over the prior art that the shortcomings mentioned above are avoided and the protective device can be removed by simply tearing it off the contact strip or the cable-harness connector.
In an alternative embodiment, there is the option of not having to remove the entire film for the final testing of a cable-harness connector. For this purpose,
provision is made to design the protective device in two parts, wherein a first vi I vi in two parts, wherein a first p part of the protective device is bonded directly to the contact strip. Said part has openings that coincide with the contact elements in the contact strip. Said openings are freed by removing the further part of the protective device applied to the first part so that the cable-harness connector can be finally tested by means of a mating connector. After said final testing, either a new further part is bonded to the first part or the further part already applied can be used again.
As an alternative to this, by applying a single protective film, it can also be pierced for test purposes by mating contacts, wherein, after conclusion of the
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
final test, the bores produced by the piercing can be sealed again by applying the further part of the protective film.
There are many methods and options for applying the protective device to the contact strip of a cable-harness connector. One design is that, during the production of the protective film, a bonding agent, for example an adhesive, has already been applied to one side of the protective film, the adhesive being protected by means of a protective film Before the protective element is applied, the protective film has accordingly to be removed.
A further embodiment is that the plastic film is welded onto the rim of the contact strip. The welding can take place either by means of exposure to heat or by ultrasound.
Advantageous developments of and improvements to the protective device specified in Claim 1 are possible as a result of the measures listed in the subclaims.
Drawings In the drawings : Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first exemplary embodiment of a protective device mounted on a contact strip of a cable-harness connector;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Figure 2 shows a perspective view of a further exemplary embodiment of a protective device mounted on a contact strip of a cable-harness connector.
Description of the exemplary embodiments In the case of the exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 1, a protective device 1 is shown that is disposed on a contact strip 2 that is disposed in a housing 3 of a cable-harness connector 4 and is at least partly bonded. The contact strip 2 is of flat design with respect to the contact strip not shown in greater detail in the drawings. Disposed in the contact strip 2 are contact elements 5 that can receive contact pins of the terminal strip.
In one design, the protective device 1 can be applied directly to the contact strip 2 of flat design. In a further exemplary embodiment that is not shown in the drawings, the protective device 1 can be applied to the rim of the housing 3 in such a way that the entire side of the cable-harness connector 4 facing the connector strip can be covered.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 1, the protective device 1 comprises a protective element 6 that is of film-type design. On its one side, an area 7 is provided with adhesive by means of which the protective element 6 can be mounted detachably on the contact strip 2. Provided at one end of the protective element 6 is a manipulating tag 8 that serves to make it possible to gnp the protective element 6 easily and then to remove it.
In the exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 2 of a protective device 1, it comprises two protective elements 6 and 6', the first protective element 6 being
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
directly applicable to the contact strip 2 and there being bonded to said protective element 6 a further protective element 6'that can cover the openings 9 provided in the first protective element 6. The openings 9 are disposed in line with the openings for the contact elements 5 and can be passed through by socalled test connectors for testing the connection of the cable harness. After the conclusion of this inspection, the further protective element 6'is applied to the contact strip 2.
The very simply designed protective device 1 makes it possible to protect in a very simple way contact strips 2 of a cable-harness connector 4 that have very different dimensions.
