Abstract
A hermetically sealed light source with a self contained battery 11 and an array of light emitting diodes for illuminating deep cavity operations, in particular abdominal operations. The lamp is hand held with the battery 11 contained in the handle 10. A connector piece 19 is glued between the main body 9 and the handle 10. A thumb screw 16 turns inwards in order to engage the battery contacts and switch the lamp on. The lamp provides the illumination necessary to record the operation on video.
Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
Self contained light source
For deep cavity operations.
In certain medical operation especially deep obdominal ones the area being operated upon is in shadow. The purpose of this invention is to apply an independant source of light to this area enabling the operation to be recorded satisfactorily on video.
The invention conprises plastic body which completely encloses a battery and a source of light together with a means of switching the light on; which is hermetically sealed so that it can be sterilised by a suitable method.
The light source consist of fifteen high intesity white Light Emitting Diodes wired in parallel and powered by a single Lithium Battery having sufficient power to last throughout a long operation up to about ten hours. The power is switched on by turning a thumb screw which causes a contact to be pressed down on to the battery.
Once it has been assembled the whole device is sterilised by a suitable method and sealed in a sterile bag
The invention is now described with reference to the accompanying drawings to which :-
Figure 1 is the lamp mounting (1) for the fifteen LEDs showing the holes (2) to take the LED leads, The side view showing the stepped construction to enable connection to be made to the LEDs.
Figure 2 shows the cross section of the lamp mounting (3) with LEDs fitted and also showing the wire bindings (4) around the steps which are soldered to the LED leads.
Figure 3 is the lamp housing (5) which completely encloses the complete mounting (3) having a hole (6) and a front plate (7) and is attached with Araldite (8) to the main body (9) of the assembly as shown at Figure 4.
Figure 4 is the main body (9) of the assembly which consists of a hollow tube connected to the lamp housing as shown and which is connected at its upper end the handle (10) which contains the battery (11).
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Figure 5 is the handle (10) consisting of a hollow tube to accommodate the battery (11) and having an insert (12) at one end which accommodates one of the battery contacts (13) and a end plate (14) at the other end which contains a threaded hole (15) to accommodate a thumbscrew (16) which engages the other battery contact (17) and presses the battery down against a compression spring (18) to complete the battery connection.
Figure 6 is a solid angled connector (19) with a hole (20) through it to take the wires (21). The connector (19) is glued to the main body (9) and the handle (10) to connect them together.
Figure 7 is the insert (12) to accommodate one of the battery contacts (13)
Figure 8 is the compression spring (18) to hold the battery clear of the contact (17).
Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view of the whole assembly showing the wiring (21).
